Work continues towards our obtaining the Ecoschools Green Flag Award, the highest category within this scheme. We already have achieved Silver and Bronze levels, thanks to the enthusiasm and efforts of children of all age ranges. Final tweaks to our Green Flag application are currently being made - but this is only the beginning - the whole school is behind the initiative and new ideas are continually emerging from staff and students to further our agenda in this area.
Since we began our implementation of the eco-schools programme we have:
- installed a low energy boiler;
- installed individual room thermostats and automatic door closures;
- we have installed push-on taps in all basins;
- added two new bins in the playgrounds
- been composting all our food waste: 360 kg of food waste has been composted – a tremendous amount: well done to Tom Kiernan and his team
- doubled the amount of fruit and salad we consume.
- started growing our own vegetables. For example, for a week we have been eating lettuce produced by Year 3 and 4.
- been recycling all our cardboard and waste paper: From January to May we have recycled 17.8 tonnes of cardboard, paper, glass and tin.
- Here are some further staggering figures for you, as a result of these measures:
- In the first three months of this year we have saved 8,500 litres of oil, gas and water; and waste reduction measures have meant a reduction equivalent to 36 tonnes per year.
