Hot on the heels of our recent good news where we were awarded the Woodland Trust Green Schools Gold Award, we are proud to report that our Ecoschools Committee and Science Club have netted us a third award for conservation work at a national level.

Natural England's Big Wildlife Garden scheme is intended to create small Nature Reserves around the country to encourage species like butterflies, bees and native plants and animals to flourish where parts of their population are in steep decline.

Thanks to hard work by children from all age ranges across the school we have gained Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards under this scheme over the last three years.

However we can now announce that we have become one of only 108 recipients nationwide of the top Green Award for our Wildlife Garden.

We do not know of any other schools in the country with the three major national conservation-related awards - the Ecoschool Green Flag, the Woodland Trust Gold Award and the Natural England Green Award. We are very proud of the students' efforts.

Terrington wins Gold wildlife award

Thanks to the diligent efforts of the Science Club and Ecoschools Committee after two years of hard work we have won the prestigious Gold Award in the Woodland Trust Green Tree Schools competition. This award is designed to promote the care and appreciation of native woodlands and their role in wildlife conservation and biodiversity, and the Woodland Trust are sending us a wooden plaque for the entrance hall to celebrate our achievement.

We are very proud of our "green credentials" as a school, and this Gold award will sit alongside our Ecoschools Green Flag award and our Gold Award for our wildlife garden from natural England's Big Wildlife Garden scheme.

Well done to all students involved - a lot of work!

Wildlife Pond - frogspawn

Our progress towards the Woodland Trust Green Tree School Gold Award continues - in the Easter holidays we were given large quantities of frogspawn by Ashfield Hellebores nursery near Selby and this has been put in its new home - the wildlife garden pond! Watch this space for updates.....

RULES OF COMPETITION

The Competition will consist of four groups of six teams. Matches will be five minutes each way with one minute for half-time. All conversions will be drop kicks. After a try the team having scored will restart with a drop out from the centre.

The group matches will provide four quarter-finalists for the Cup Competition, four for the Plate Competition, four for the Bowl Competition and four for the Shield Competition.

Squads may contain no more than ten players. Up to three players may be replaced in any match after consultation with the match referee. Once a player has been replaced he may take no further part in that match but may, of course, play in subsequent matches.

Any player SENT OFF may take no further part in the tournament.

Three points will be awarded for a win and one for a draw. In the event of two or more teams having the same number of points after their group matches, positions in the group will be decided by the number of tries scored in all their group matches. If this is equal on tries converted and if still equal by points difference. As a last resort, it will be decided by a toss of a coin.

In the knockout stages if games are drawn at full time, sudden-death will be played with sides changing ends every five minutes until there is a score. In the event of a dispute, the organisers' decision will be final.

Mindful of IAPS guidelines, this year's competition will adhere to a limit of under 63.5 kg (10 stones). Each team will report to the Music Room immediately before the start of the Competition for the weigh-in-all players must be weighed!

A doctor will be in attendance throughout the tournament. Please contact the scorer's position should the doctor's services be required.

As part of our Ecoschools initiative the Science Department has relaunched our ink cartridge recycling scheme. Last year we sent off three large boxes of ink cartridges (around 70 cartridges) to raise funds for the John Muir Trust for wilderness preservation. This year we are collecting inkjet cartridges AND now old mobile phones to raise funds for the Born Free Foundation.

We would be very grateful if you could bring in any old inkjet cartridges from home, and any old mobile phones, to add to our appeal collection. We are collecting Hewlett Packard, Dell, Samsung, Lexmark, Neopost and non-BCI Canon cartridges - inkjet type only, and no laser toner cases please.

In terms of mobiles, there is no need to bring in chargers, SIMs or accessories, and any SIM cards we receive will be destroyed.

It would be much appreciated if you could help us in our effort to remove these items from landfill and also to raise funds for charity by collecting them for re-use. Please bring any contributions to the Senior Science Lab.

Science Club on Monday February 7th saw the Boarders given a challenge - to build the tallest structure possible, capable of supporting a 100g mass for 20 seconds, and using only A4 paper and Sellotape. To give the business a tweak of urgency, the students only had thirty minutes to complete the task! The prize of Mars bars and good marks ensured dedication....

Feverish activity ensued. Some groups opted for a planning session first, sketching out possible designs (a triangle-based pyramid seemed the best bet for a replicable shape to use as the basis), some just leapt into the fray and began tearing, folding, rolling and sticking.

Inevitably some pundits began to examine the flexibility of the rules. Were there, perhaps, separate prizes for tallest and strongest structures? Could more paper be cadged beyond the 20-sheet limit? Industrial espionage began to play a role.... suggestions of sabotage made by a certain C. Bower met with a negative response.

The announcement of bonus marks for artistic elegance added a spur, and sounds of crashes around the Science Lab, as designs were tested to destruction, competed with arguments about design and the sounds of frenziedly-ripping Sellotape.

In the end all the designs were extremely well-made and strongly built, and all met the criteria for the challenge of load carrying over time.

The results were as follows;

Team Wonky Rocket    37cm

Team 9-11    77.8cm

Team Empire State Of Mind    99.5cm

Team Leaning Tower of Sellotape    42cm

Team Tsunami Tower    43cm

Team Edward/Small Ben    25cm

The grand jury of International Adjudicators then went into conclave, and duly announced that the Grand Prize went to Team Empire State Of Mind with a skyscraping 99.5cm (sorry Matthew, not quite a metre!). the prize for Artistic Merit went  to Team 9-11, with their "Geodesic Tower". the Prize for Most Patching Up With Sellotape went to Team Leaning Tower of Sellotape (no product placement here, honest) who will, we believe, be responsible for Europe's plastic shortage for the next 20 years.

Well done to all!

Whilst many would suggest that turning our boarders loose amongst the kingdom's largest collection of edged weapons might be slightly risky, nonetheless this was the Boarders' Outing on Sunday February 7th, when we piled onto the long-suffering minibus and trundled along the A64 to sunny Leeds, and the Royal Armouries museum.

The various galleries of exhibits caused quite a stir, notable "wow gosh" moments being the world's only surviving suit of elephant battle armour, the interactive longbow demonstration, the Weapons of James Bond display and the weapons and armour for children.

Inevitably the shop caused merriment and a certain amount of diversion. Attempts to purchase grenades, crossbows and fake daggers were sadly thwarted (the students, not the staff) and attempts to find rubber bouncing eyeballs and synthetic blood (ideally raspberry flavour, apparently) came to naught. A good time was had by all!

Perhaps surprisingly when thinking of the X-Box generation, draughts (by committee)  proved a huge hit!

Science Club this evening mixed colourless solutions of ammonium chloride with maroon solutions of cobalt II chloride to produce a reddish final mixture. The students then soaked filter paper in this, having cut the paper into various different shapes first.

They found that when the papers dried, they were pretty much colourless, but when exposed to heat on the lab radiators the papers turned a deep turquoise in colour. This reaction proved to be reversible, when soaked in the mixture, the paper once more turned pale to colourless, but once again went deep turquoise when warmed.

This is an oxidation reaction, which members of Year 8 were able to link into their revision for Common Entrance.

Perhaps the most obvious use for this is in the creation of invisible inks that become visible once warmed!
