On Tuesday 31st January Years 1 and 2 had the pleasure of visiting a concert put on for local school children by the students of York University Music Department . The concert was led and conducted bya third year student Tom Marlow as part of his solo project. The concert took place in the Jack Lyons Concert Hall which was a great venue for the children to experience with a good view of what was happening for all. There were two grand pianos and small sections of brass , woodwind, strings with a bass drum and xylophone. Tom introduced each of the sections and engaged the children in answering questions. They all loved the big bass drum and the xylophone.
The concert was Saint Saens Carnival of the Animals which showcased many sections and soloists and kept all the children interested. We have quite a few budding conductors at Terrington! The narration was not the usual Ogden Nash poetry but specially commisioned narration written by another third year student. The conductor thrilled the children as he jumped around on his podium to the pianos imitating the kangeroo. My particular favourite was the cello playing the swan.
It was a wonderful experience for the children and Miss Savage and myself will enjoy our follow up work inspired by this.
Many thanks to governor Catherine Duncan for inviting us.
