The Middle School Department was opened in November 2003. It is housed in a new purpose-built building adjacent to the Pre-Prep and acts as a transition to the main Prep School. There are four classrooms for Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 classes. The maximum class size is 18.This is a vital transitional stage in the children's development. We aim for high standards in literacy and numeracy and have a rich broad and balanced curriculum,a happy ,safe and supportive atmosphere with a strong commitment to helping children achieve whatever their ability. Learning is planned and managed so that every child is supported.

Each class has their own form tutor with the help of a Teaching Assistant. The form tutor delivers most of the curriculum but the pupils in the Middle school start to get an opportunity to have the benefit of specialist Teachers.
In addition to weekly Physical Education and swimming lessons the pupils are coached in Football, Rugby, Cricket, Cross Country and Athletics (Boys) and Netball, Hockey, Rounders, Cross Country and Athletics (Girls). There is also an opportunity to have Dance, Judo, Tri-Golf, Table-Tennis and Tennis Coaching from specialist visiting teachers. Pupils get an opportunity to participate in matches against other schools.

All pupils have two lessons of French per week covering conversation, games, songs and simple grammar and vocabulary in preparation for more formal lessons in the main school.

Children in the Middle School are nurtured and are able to develop into independent learners in preparation for the next stage of their education at Terrington. Great emphasis is put on sharing and learning to live with one another both in school and in the boarding house.
