U11 Cricket vs. Bramcote/Woodleigh (09.05.12)

On a hot and sunny day...sorry, on a cold and wet day the under eleven cricket team played their first match of the season against a combined Bramcote/Woodleigh team at Woodleigh. Gabby won the toss and put the opposition into bat first. Tight bowling from Gabby and Alex K made it difficult for the opening pair to score runs. However, after the initial tight opening bowling spells runs soon started to come freely. Extras did particularly well with 34 but the stand out innings was from Anderson who made a well worked 49 not out. Alex C bowled well and was unlucky not to pick up any wickets with his leg spin bowling. At the end of the innings the score was a healthy 109 for 2. One wicket a piece for Max W and George B.

After tea and a team talk the opening pair of Albert and George B strode out to the wicket ready for battle! Unfortunately, they were soon back in the pavillion. Gabby took it upon himself to keep the scoreboard ticking and with some excellent shots did precisely that! Jack, Charlie B and Alex C all found it difficult to score runs and with Gabby falling to the last ball of the match the innings finished on 59 for 6. Gabby finishing with a well deserved 27.

Extras and dropped catches cost the boys dearly today and hopefully they will learn from this in time for the next match against Red House next week. Lost by 50 runs.

U11 a Football vs. Sedbergh (17.03.12)

U11 Football vs. Sedbergh (17.03.12)

After a short break due to rugby sevens it was back to playing football, with the final match of the season against Sedbergh away. With all the boys chauffeur driven by Mr. Witteveen, we arrived just in time for the kick off. The conditions were heavy under foot and it was difficult for the boys to play the flowing football that they had played all season. There were numerous chances for both sides throughout the first half but at half time the score stood at nil-nil.

Changes were made at half time with Tom Jones replacing Alex Chalton. George Black moving from the midfield to go up front with Tom slotting into the midfield. The second half was very similar to the first with both teams having numerous opportunities to break the deadlock. Both goalkeepers were having great games and it was only a wonder strike from Ton Jones, two minutes from the end that resulted in the boys from Terrington winning 1-0. Not the best game of the season, but the boys stuck at it and deserved to win in the end. A great way to finish, what has been, a successful season.

U11 Rugby vs. Westville House (03.03.12)

U11 Rugby vs. Westville House (03.03.12)

Well, I've been looking forward to this fixture all week as it would be the first time that I'd see all the under eleven boys play rugby. On the request of the oppositions coach it was decided to play 10-a-side, with three forwards and seven backs. We started with our strongest side and it soon became apparent that we would be too strong for the opposition. A well worked move in the first couple of minutes resulted in Charlie B scoring in the corner, which was converted by Gabby. This was to be the pattern of play for the majority of the first half, with George B, Max and Joe B crossing the try line. Changes were made on a regular basis during the first half as well as the second.

After a brief chat at half time more changes were made with all the subs now on the pitch. It was great to see Andrew, Joe O, Alex K, Tom M, George W and Tom C running onto the pitch with smiles on their faces ready to get stuck in! Tom Jones played superbly well at fly half and instructed his back division with great confidence. Tries in the second half came from George B, Tom J and two from Max. Tom J stepped up to the kicking role and converted three of the tries. Westville played some good rugby and got onto the score sheet on three occasions, making the final score 50-15. Well done to all the boys from both teams. The game was played in great spirit and was an enjoyable way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Thank you to the referee, Mr Jon Glen, for doing an excellent job and to the parent for their support on the sideline. I look forward to coaching the present year six boys next year in game 1.

U11 A Football vs. Mowden Hall (01.02.12)

U11 A Football vs. Mowden Hall (01.02.12)

On a bitterly cold day, the under 11 boys travelled the long journey to Mowden Hall. The pitch was slightly smaller to what the boys are use to and it would require a slight adjustment to their style of play. From the first blast of the whistle Mowden exerted huge amounts of pressure and this continued for the majority of the game. Mowden were playing great football, having the majority of possession but it was the visitors that scored first with a break way goal. The lead didn't last long and Mowden scored within minutes to make the half time score 1-1.

It was made clear to the boys that if they were going to get anything out of the game they really needed to pull their socks up and get stuck in! The message seemed to have sunk in and at 3-1 up things were looking good. However, Mowden kept exerting the pressure and with a couple of minutes left scored their second of the game. Straight from the kick off Mowden won possession back and before we knew it were in our box. Max W, in a moment of madness, forgot that he was playing football and decided to grab hold of the ball. Realizing what he had done he dropped it as quick as he could but the whistle had already blown for a penalty. Up stepped the Mowden captain to take the penalty against our very own super stopper in goal George Raines. The rest is history! Not only did George save the penalty, he also followed it up with another fantastic save low down to his right. The whistle blew for full time, the boys mobbed George and we had won! I must say that the better side didn't win, but a sign of a good team is that they still win when they don't play well! Congratulation to the Mowden boys for playing some very attractive football and if they continue to play in that manner they will be very difficult to beat. Well done to all the boys for never giving up. The unbeaten run continues!

U11 A Football vs. Easingwold Town AFC (28.01.12)

After two tough games earlier in the week this was going to be the hardest one out of the lot! I always knew that Easingwold would be a well drilled team with talented footballers in their squad and it was going to be a difficult afternoon. However, we also have a group of boys that know how to play football and the previous results have shown that to be the case. Once again we played a different formation due to the opposition wanting to play eight-a-side, so Tom Jones was drafted in from the B's to show what he was made of!

The first half was a tense affair but Terrington had the better of the play and should have been at least two up. The Easingwold keeper was having a fantastic game and pulled off some of the best saves I've seen at this age group. Nil-nil at half time. Into the second half and it was much the same as the first half until Tom J slid past the Easingwold defence and slotted the ball past the keeper. GOAL!!! Concentrate was the message from the coach. No need to worry as five minutes later Alex C went on one of his now famous jinky runs to make it two nil to the boys from Terrington. Easingwold never gave up and scored a well worked goal to make the final few minutes a tense affair for the home team. With all the boys now defending for their lives, Easingwold pressed hard with one last attack. A goal line clearance, aerial ping pong in the box, followed by Jack C huffing the ball out of play, and the final whistle blew. 2-1 to Terrington. A fantastic game of football and a thoroughly enjoyable way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Well done to all the boys from both teams for entertaining the large crowd on the sideline. Thank you to all the parents for supporting the boys and the kitchen staff for the best sausage and chips in Yorkshire!
