The final match of the term was away at Pocklington one of the strongest sides we play. But with our recent form very good we were certainly up beat and ready for the game. In the initial period of the game Pocklington had plenty of possession and looked comfortable on the ball. It wasn't long before we started to show some determination and get in their faces putting pressure on the ball carrier. Once they made a few mistakes we had our opportunities to attack. With Lily providing good width on the left we broke with Annabelle and Eliza driving at their defense and slipping passes through to Lily. Just as we got ourselves into the game and committed more players to attack Pocklington broke with pace down the right wing and a shot/cross was saved by Scarlett only for the rebound to land on the stick of the forward and bounce into the net.
We continued to play well and a lovely bit of hockey saw the ball pass between Emma, Serena, Annabelle, Lily and finally Eliza who was unable to get her shot away before colliding with the goalkeeper. Had it gone in it would be far and away the best bit of hockey of the term. The second half followed a similar pattern to the first. There were chances at both ends, Scarlett made some great saves and we managed to get the ball into their D on numerous occasions. The more we attacked the more dangerous they looked on the break but for some excellent defending by Angela and Emma we may have conceded more. It was disappointing to not score but their keeper made some good saves but it was one of those days when nothing fell for us in attack. Rebounds and desperate clearances found the gaps and the shots we did manage were from difficult angles. The effort and determination from the midfield pair of Eliza and Serena was brilliant and although the girls will be disappointed to have got nothing out of the game it was by far the best performance of the season. Pockllington are a huge school and to be able to compete against them is a real credit to the team. I am a very proud coach today, well done everybody.
