After a narrow defeat in our previous match against Woodleigh  I was hopeful that we would be in match form. Coming straight from the athletics field however this was not to be. Steven and Joe won two of their four matches , Chelsea and Abi won one, Nathan and Harvey won two and Tom and Jordan  played very well but just did not get to their 21 quickly enough. Miss Tanner added the scores and we had not done enough to get anywhere near Woodleigh's score. Their first pair Ryan and rob played very competently and their victory was well -deserved. with a little more practse and application I am sure that we can improve the score when we play U12's on Monday 18th June.

In the second round of the IAPS Rounders tournament (a national Prep schools knock out competition) the U11 girls drew St Pius X, Preston away. The weather was much more suited to Rounders than our previous matches have been this season and we crossed the Pennines in glorious sunshine. At one point on the journey, busy putting the world to rights, we were worried we had left the girls at Terrington as they were so quiet - thank you Apple! A brief stop on the tops to refresh and we arrived at our destination in good time. St Pius X were very welcoming and Mr Long, a friendly face on the games circuit, and his team accompanied us to their enclosed pitch that bordered the Carmelite Convent.

Lily won the toss and opted to field. The girls, who have not had much practice together, did a reasonable job and managd to get the opposition all out for just 6 and half rounders. Had they been a bit quicker throwing to second they could have stopped some halves, but overall they fielded well and took a number of good catches. Therefore at the beginning of their batting innings the afternoon held some promise. Alas Mr Long had positioned his girls well and a deadly backstop did for our non hitters. Anyone who failed to make contact with the ball was very lucky to reach first post before the ball. We were soon down to four girls, Tara easily being our most consistent batter, was unfortunately caught out, and the remaining girls were all out simultaneously when the back stop threw the ball into the batters box to stop the innings. As we had only amassed a meagre 3 rounders, less than half the score of St Pius we were put back into bat.

They did not fair much better tthough and as Tara was out early doors it was left to Frankie to add to the rounders tally, scoring our only full rounder of the match. Clemmie and Abi hit consistently well and although they weren't rewarded with any rounders they kept themselves in and stayed safe. St Pius had some very good fielders and were clearly well coached but our team failed to put them under any real pressure. The match finished 6.5 rounders to 6, meaning St Pius won by an innings. If the U11s want to improve their form they have to display a little more aggression and practise, practise, practise their hitting. However, there is plenty of the season left for them to work on their skills. The afternoon was finished off with a hearty match tea and a pleasant drive home. The girls behaved impeccably all day and represented the school well, giving myself and Mrs Whitfield an easy job to do.

At last the rain had stopped but unfortunately the temperature was far from that suited to rounders. So, with our thermals on we braved the fields of Queen Mary's. Their rounders pitches were waterlogged so new pitches at the front of the house were hastily set up.

Amy, our captain for the day lost the toss and we went into bat. With very little practice behind us this term ,the girls were on a steep learning curve and played a little too safe, meaning that we got a meagre score after our 36 balls. There was some good hitting from all of the girls but getting to second to score was proving difficult.

The fielding improved as the game progressed but with one particularly good hitter from Queen Mary's they started mounting up the score. Emily did some great stops at third post and Poppy got the ball quickly to the bowler on many times to stop those half rounders. Eventually we figured out that the ball needed to go to 4th post to stop the rounders .

We went in to bat again with quite a lot of ground to make up, but a few silly mistakes meant the team were out before the 36 balls were up with a record, three players being out together as they ran each other out. A little more watching and talking to each other is required.Lizzie kept her head and scored our one and only rounder of the match!

The second innings of fielding showed a marked improvement and we managed to keep the score down. Concentration lapsed  however with the last few balls and the opposition scored three rounders in quick succession.

The girls tried hard and with a young team against  all U11 girls they made a decent fist of it. There is a lot to learn but it is very early in the season and lots more matches in the future.

Final score:     L 6 - 16.5

Junior School visit Stockbridge

On a glorious spring day, ideal for gardening, years 2, 3 and 4 set out for the first of four sessions at Stockbridge Technology centre at Cawood, near Selby. The centre's Education programme is called Reconnecting Children with Food and in our four sessions we will be able to see food production from seed to plate. The centre is nationally known for its research into F1 plants, growing crops for supermarkets and most importantly researching into plant cures for diseases such as Malaria. It also has its own Stockbridge variety of rhubarb which I am growing at the allotment this year!

This was the first time that Year 2 had been given the opportunity to experience this venture and they fully participated in all the activities.

First was potato planting out in the field. Each child had three potatoes to sow and after much digging they were all safely planted. We then planted onion sets and red onion plants. hHese two crops will be harvested on our final visit in September.

The last planting outdoors was red and green lettuce plantlets which we then covered with fleece to keep out bugs and for frost protection. This was great fun as we had to pass the fleece through everyones hands. A great team effort!

After a well earned snack we planted stocks, cabbage, parsley, marigolds and tomatoes in the greenhouse. These will be watered and looked after until we return to collect them in May when we will plant them out into our school plots.

To end the day out leader Catherine took us to some of the other greenhouses to look at sowing machines and various researches into compost . It was a most enjoyable day. It was lovely to be out in the fresh air and  the children were a pleasure to take. Thanks to all the staff who accompanied us and to Catherine our leader. We look forward to our next visit in May.

U11 netball tournament @ Terrington Hall

On a grey spring afternoon eight U11 netbal teams met at Terrington for the annual U11 Netball Tournament. The play was five minutes each way in two groups using the netball court and sports hall .

Our first match was against Bramcote. We had most of the possession of the ball but after playing at Queen Margaret's on U13 height posts the shooters needed to get their eyes in and shoot with accuracy. At half time the score was 1-1 although we had plenty of opportunity to shoot. with some strong words from the coach the girls went back on with greater determinuation and we managed another goal to win 2-1.

With Tara coming in to Goal Defence and Clemmie and Francesca  shooting we had a fast and skilful game against St Martin's Ampleforth and although the opposition tried to defend we were too quick for them and the game ended 9-0.

Our next game was agaist Woodleigh who we drew against earlier in the term . We conceded an early goal but with great movement from Abi at Centre and some lovely intercepting by Sophie and Olivia we got ahead and with accurate sshooting we won awith a comfortable 8-1.

We had won all of our matches so we played the runners up Queen Mary's from the other group in the semi -final  with Cundall Manor and Bramcote . After playing out doors for most of the afternoon it took the girls the first few moments to adjust to the indoor game. The girls played some excellent netball although there was a moment of football in the middle of the match the girls kept their cool and fought for every ball. Erin and Nicole got some good interceptions and it was great to see the ball going down the court as we had practised. At half time the score was 4-1 so as long as we kept our defence up we would be safe. Lily and Tara stopped every ball and Lily was quick and accurate with her back-line passes  clearing the ball away from their D. THe whistle couldn't come too soon and we were relieved to keep the score at 4-1.

The final was a re-run of the previous year with our opponents being Cundall Manor. We kept their side of the score card clean and romped home with a final score of 5-0 winning the trophy.

Many thanks to the parents and Mrs Glen for their support and encouragement and to Miss Tanner for scoring and time-keeping but most of all congratulations to a great U11 Netball team who played their socks off. I am so proud of you girls. you certainly deserved to win today.

One more match to win  this term on Saturday against Sedbergh.

Veronica Whitfield

We had a late start as we had to set of without  a player who fortunately we intercepted on the way to Sherriff Hutton!

We arrived at Queen Margaret's and were  delighted to find out that we had Sophie Philpott as our guide for the day. There were 21 schools taking part with 18 team in the netball tournament.

The first match was against Duncombe who we had never come up against before. We got off to a god start and were 2-1 up at half time. with some great passing from Abi we got the ball to Clemmie and Frankie giving us a comfortable win of 4-1.After a rest of two matches we were against Queen Mary's who had put in a team at the last minute to make up the numbers for a team that had pulled out. It is amazing what a years growth can do to young girls and they towered over the Terrington tots.Their score was not counting in the overall tournament but we still had to gain our points. Unfortunately in the second half they were far more dominant and we lost 2-3 but gained a point on the score board.

After a lovely lunch and for the girls a mess about on the zip -wire it was time to get back to some serious netball.  We played The Mount Junior School. This was a sloppy match which even in the girls opinion was not well played but we got our five points from a 1-0 .

It was essential that the girls really concentrated on the next game if they were to stay in the tournament.and  with some great play from Olivia and Nicole we beat St Mary's Hall 4-3.

Our final match in the group was Ashdell Prep A . It having been 32 years since I taught at Ashdell Prep I was keen for the girls to at least match their opponents. This was probably the best game of the day for the girls and they were really fired up with all 8 girls playing for every ball .Nicole has obviously been watching the rugby too much as she went in for a couple of tackles which she was inevitably pulled up for !

We had a score of 21 points which put us in the semi -final. We lost in the semi final to Richmond House who then went on to beat St Pius in the final.

It was a great day of netball. Well done to all the players. Special mention must go to the shooters and Abi  at Goal Defence who played tremendously in every game.

Many thanks to out loyal band of supporters for spending the day with us.

Badminton V Woodleigh 5th March

This was our first badminton match for some time following 6 evening sessions on a Monday night at the beginning of this term. Unfortunately some of the team were double booked as they were playing netball at Read school. Many thanks to the boys who made up the team. There were 4 pairs  in each team led by their magnificent captain Steven Jones. Each pair played to 21 points and each pair played each other .

Joe N and Steven                  3  -1

Cameron and Nathan          1-   3

Chelsea and Tom                2 - 2

Joe O and Jordan               1-  3

This brought the points total to Woodleigh 266 and Terrington 238

To end the afternoon the top pairs had a play off with Joe and Steven beating their opponents 15-13.

There was some very entertaining play from all concerned and I was pleased withe the effort and sportsmanship of all the players. We look forward to playing another match later on in the year.

Manty thanks to Miss Tanner for her scoring and expert coaching.

U11 Netball v Westville House 4th March

After drawing with Westville house at Sedbergh on Wednesday we were aware that this was going to be a tough match and with Abi and Tara missing from the squad,it was.

We had first centre pass and with  some super feeding from Nicole we soon left Westville behing and at the end of the first quarter were 2-0 up. We continued to dominate the game but the Westville defence was becoming more determined and it was increasingly difficult to get near the post. Clemmie had some wonderful shots and with Frankie supporting and Amelia , who had an amazing game we were still in the lead at half time with a score of 6-3.

With an early goal from Westville in the second half followed by another and then another the score was closing in .  We went into the final quarter still ahead at 7-6 but panic had started to set in and we were unfortunate to miss several shots at goal ,whereas the Westville girls got into their D and had a superb goal from the edge. We were now even with everything to fight for but unfortunately in life dreams don't always come true and ours slipped away in the last minutes of a very fast, agressively fought match.

Well done to all the girls who played their heartr out. Anna and Amelia certainly earned their place in today's squad and show great promise for the future. it was good to see Lily back on form too. Onwards and upwards to the next match girls !

Final score L 7-10

With lovely spring sunshine for St David's Day the trusty silver bus travelled 'up North' to Durham. After a quick warm up the tournament got underway. There were seven schools playing in a round robin of matches consisting of two five minute halves Our first game was against The Choristers School. We had a poor start and it was not looking good but the Terrington girls soon pulled themselves round after a half time chat from a grumpy coach and at the end of the match we had won 3-1. After this was our only break in play and soon it was time to change positions again to play Red House. With some good shooting from Amelia and Emma and captain Amy's defending we won this match 4-1.

Our third match was against Durham High School and from the first whistle it was apparent that this was going to be a tough one. We were penalised several time for defending with arms as our players are more used to the 7 a side game and this lost us posession.

At half time the score was 0-3 and although in the second half Terrington played with more skill and determination we didn't manage a score and were very disappointed to lose 0-4.

The girls were determined not to lose any more games and gained a very good win over Polam Hall with some great shooting from Anna, Amelia,Coco and Georgina bringing the score to 6-0.

By this point in the tournament the girls had got used to the High Five rules and played a great game against Bow School with some superb play from Anna and Emma bringing the final score to 11-1.

The final match was against Cundall Manor. This was a very close match but one that the girls did not want to slip away. Amelia in defence went for every interception and Georgina and Anna tried hard to keep their cool and score. We were relieved when the final bell was rung and the score was in our favour with a close win of 3-2.

All the girls gathered together  along with the U12's to hear the results and  we were delighted to have come second place to Durham High School who had won every one of their matches. Congratulations to the U12's for winning their tournament and regaining the trophy.

It was a lovely afternoon of netball and I was very pleased with the girls performance. Many thanks to Mrs Glen for driving us there and back and to our lone supporter Mr Prest.

U11 Netball v St Martin's Ampleforth 25.02.12

After a narrow defeat against Bramcote on Wednesday the girls were keen to prove themselves. This they did with great confidence and I had to get a good look at them to make sure that they were in fact the same set of girls!

Clemmie got us off to a good start with a nice clutch of goals and with Frankie by her side they got us ahead quite quickly. Unfortunately, Abi twisted her ankle whilst warming up so we were down to a bare seven players. Tara went in to Goal Defence, a position that she is not familiar with but a great place to put a strong player.By the end of the first quarter we were up 9-2.

This team thrives on being ahead so their play went from strength to strength and by half time with great play from all the team we were sporting a score of 16-4. Frankie and Clemmie had a change around and Tara managed to keep the ball away from the opposing D. With lots of opportunities to score'  along with good feeding from Olivia and Nicole the score continued to mount up in our favour.

In the final quarter all the girls played in a different position with Olivia and Erin shooting and Sophie going in for those important centre passes. Erin had a few opportunities to shoot and upped the score by 3 but Olivia was reluctant to try and passed the ball to Erin who it has to be said, is a lot nearer the goal net than Olivia ! But as this coach very well knows, it is not all about size!!

Well done to all the girls who showed what a good team they can be. The score does not really reflect the opposition's play as they got a lot of possession and had some lovely shots at goal.

I hope the girls will take today's positive experience with them when they go to Sedbergh on Wednesday with Mrs Glen.

Final score: 26-6
