The girls recorded another fine victory today in the JET rounders tournament in fairly difficult conditions against Giggleswick. We batted first as the rain came down slowly, running between the posts was hazardous in the wet but the umpires decided before the game that some leniency would be given to the batters. This was probably our best batting performance of the season so far with 7 of the 9 batters making contributions. There were full rounders for Serena, Tara and Annabelle whilst the others chipped in, top scorer for the afternoon was Tara with 4. Giggleswick gave us the odd chance as we attemped to run each other out and in the end we had a total of 15 and a half. As our batting came to an end so did the rain.
The opposition were physically bigger than us and had a couple of girls who hit well but our fielding was excellent. Tara and Annabelle did really well at the backstop first post routine which has taken all season to come together. Elsewhere two great one handed stops from Eliza and then Serena kept the pressure on the batters. Scarlett took a great high catch and both Angela and Ella were accurate with their throwing into Emma at second. Making it so difficult for the opponents to score added to the pressure and they started to run when it was always going to be difficult to reach the next post. In the end they were all out for 3 and a half.
We applied the follow on rule and Giggleswick batted again. This time they lacked confidence and we kept making the right decisions. The movement of the ball between the fielders was brilliant with batsman being run out on posts all round the diamond. Throught the game Iona's bowling was tremendous using a variety of types of ball which had the batters guessing. With Giggleswick not reaching our score we didn't bat a second time.
Again today we have taken our fielding up a step from which it is going to be difficult to keep improving on. Alongside this the batting was on the whole sensible.
Final Score Terrington 15 1/2 - 5 Giggleswick

The season continues with another win and another display by the girls which shows progress. We fielded first and although Cundalll had plenty of good hitters they did keep putting the ball into the air. Some great catches were held by a variety of our fielders and when the batters found some space the ground fielding was also excellent. The deep fielders moved quickly to the ball stopping the chances of halves being scored and Ella in particular did extremely well with accurate throwing over a good distance to second post. Despite having what looked like a strong batting line up they were all out for just two.
Our batting in return was its usual slow to get going but some good blows by Eliza and steady scoring from Emma we got ourselves ahead. A continuous stream of wickets left us with just the twins batting who with a mixture of ambitious running (putting the opposition under pressure) and good hitting left us with a good lead going into the second innings.
Cundalls second innings was similar to their first with good hitting, some great fielding and few rounders scored. Serena chipped in with four catches and Cundall were all out for just three. Going into bat the second time the match was already won. We didn't bat particularly well with the exception of Tara who scored more than half of our second innings total.
From the coaches point of view I was very pleased with the way we kept the scores down in the field with every member of the team pulling their weight for the benefit of their team mates. we really are now seeing the consequences of each others actions so reacting where possible to help. The batting still remains a bit hit and miss but it is nice to know that each and everyone can contribute.
Final Score Terrington 16 - 5 Cundall

The senior girls continued there good form with a comfortable win against Read. Batting first we accumulated fiftten rounders declaring our innings with just two out. Progress was very slow and if it wasn't for our captain Serena we would probably still be there managing not to get out but struggling to score. The fielding was much better the highlight being a great catch by Chelsea. Read had a couple of good hitters and were all out for eight and a half. We put them in to bat again this time the star of the show was Tara at backstop. She took three catches had four run outs at first and then stumped the box to put the whole side out, quite a remarkable feat. With the match won our second innings consisted of two hits for each player. Well done to Ella and Eliza who scored two from two.
With some tough games ahead this week it was good to start the week with a win with all the senior girls involved.
Final Score Terrington 24 - 14 Read

The sun shines at last as do the senior girls. With a few games now played the Terrington girls are starting to perform with confidence. It is always difficult at the beginning of the season getting back into the swing of things but I do believe that now we are thinking about the game. There were times this afternoon when we were swarming in the field, everybody wanting to be a part of the action.
We won the toss and fielded first. The St. Martin's girls batted for quite a long time but could only manage to score two and a half rounders. Emma took a couple of good catches and the fielding was efficient with most the team run out on the posts. In our usual fashion we started slowly with the bat accumulating halves but most importantly remaining in. As we got our eye in they were more scores to be had although the slowness of the bowling did make it difficult to hit. Serena, Alice and Tara led the way with some great hitting. Eventually we were all out for thirteen and a half.
In the second innings the opponents were better with the bat but again our fielding was good. Catches from Serena and Eliza were taken and when the infield didn't deal with the ball Ella in particular did well backing up on all fronts. St. Martin's were soon out without passing our score. With the match won we just had thirty six balls in the second innings. Serena got better and better and there were contributions from Iona, Emma and Ella.
There's looking forward to more sunshine.
Final Score Terrington 22 1/2 - 6 1/2 St. Martin's

This was by far the best performance of the season, particularly on the batting front. Fielding first we made a couple of silly mistakes but soon made amends geting Bramcote out for just two. For the first time the backstop first post team really worked well with Annabelle pushing the ball through much more quickly to Tara. One or two of the Bramcote batters could hit well but we took most of our catches and our ground fielding was excellent, well done to Ella who's performance was first class through both innings. With one or two postional changes in the field it was good to see the girls attacking the ball and thinking about backing up and helping each other.
The first batting innings was consistent with our recent performances, we stayed in but not enough of the team contributed to the score. Having said that we were hitting the ball further but regularly hitting the fielders. They had one deep you took some great catches. We finished our innings on seven and a half.
Second time around Bramcote batted much better. Scarlett and Serena were agile and quick in the field keeping everybody else on their toes. Iona tooka couple of good catches and a couple of high balls were dropped more through a lack of communication than competence but before long Bramcote were all out having not reached our score. We batted a second time but only number of balls. This time we were much better. Eliza, Serena, Annabelle, Angela and Alice all scored full rounders and more besides. Tara also made contributions having gained plenty of confidence in the recent matches. On the down side it was disappointing for so many of them to get caught out but on the plus side it was encouraging to see so many hitting the ball so well.
Final Score Terrington 19 - 7 Bramcote

This was the first match for the U12's and what a great game it was played in good spirits by both sides. Batting first we stayed in for quite a while but we were unable to score much as our best hits seemed to find the fielders and when we missed the ball the backstop first combination was too quick for us. Our fielding started pretty well, Queen Mary's had one outstanding batsman but fortunately for us she hit into one area and the twins worked well together to cover this space. Some of their batting was unorthodox and they scored in unusual areas which were difficult to defend. By the end of the first innings we were trailing by one and a half.
In the second half our batting was far superior with Annabelle, Ella, Tara and Scarlett all scoring well. When we were eventually all out they were left needing to more than twelve to win. Again we fielded well, Ella and Scarlett taking some great catches in the deep and Iona and Annabelle also taking two catches each. The Queen Mary's batter continued to hit the ball enormous distances but we coped really well keeping her down to just a few halves.
It was a very enjoyable game played between two good sides but we edged it probably as we had more good batsman and stayed in for longer.
Final Score terrington 17 1/2 - 10 1/2 Queen Mary's

On a freezing cold May afternoon the U13 played their first round in the national knockout tournament.Having won the toss we fielded first. The opposition had some big hitters but early on we contained them well whilst at the same time removing the weaker batters. Our fielding in the in field was excellent and a fantastic catch by Ella in the outfield gave us more confidence. More catches were taken by Serena, Scarlett and Iona and we soon had them all out for seven and a half. Our batting was good in the fact that we stayed in but we didn't really look like we were going to score heavily. With plenty of young girls in the side it was difficult for them to have the strength hitting against the wind to get the ball far enough for rounders. We did though accumulate some halves and both Iona and Serena split the field to score full rounders. At the half way point we were ahead by just a half.
The secong innings of fielding didn't start brilliantly as the first two batters scored but after this it was a procession of run outs that kept the score to very few. Annabelle at backstop along with iona at bowler kept their eyes open for the runners around the posts and it paid dividends. Westbourne were soon all out for just four. It was again just a case of hanging about and not taking any chances and we should score enough. An early and some what surprising hit from Angela took the pressure off and when Tara run well to confuse the opposition it was Ella who took her chance to score the winning rounder.
A good win in very difficult conditions and obviously still plenty to work on in these early stages of the season.
Final Score Terrington 12 1/2 - 11 1/2 Westbourne

The first match of the season is always difficult so it was nice to go to Harrogate where the game was played in good spirits with coaching by the staff to help both sides get back into the swing of rounders. We fielded first and restricted the opponents to just two rounders. Their girls didn't find it easy as the cold conditions and long grass made it difficult to score, there were some great catches by Serena and Emma. Our first batting innings faired a little better as we scored five though much of this was down to their bowling.
It was definitely a game of two halves. Second time round the batting was much improved by both sides. A cracking catch from Angela, self preservation the motive behind it, as well as two further catches from Serena. Ella worked well in the deep restricting the big hits to halves but there is still plenty to work on, too many catches went down and the girls weren't fully switched on as to who should have been backing up and where. There is also the need to be more ruthless with the backstop first post combination. Finally HLC were out for ten leaving us needing to score more than seven.
It wasn't a total that should have worried us too much but when Eliza ran herself out followed next ball by Serena being caught things weren't looking to good. The most promising part of the game was the way the others stuck to their task, stayed in and accumulated rounders. Much of the credit goes to Annabelle and Iona who did most of the scoring but they were greatly helped by Tara and Ella who kept plugging away.
Good to start with a win but so much still to do.
Final Score Terrington 16 1/2 - 12 HLC

The final match of what has been a successful season was away at Easingwold playing 11 aside on grass. Everybody in the games group was involved in some way or other a fitting way to end the season particularly since we won.
From the outset we had much of the possesion and despite playing on the grass we did try to play a passing game. There were some delightful through balls by Eliza, Angela and Serena in the early stages and with Iona and Tara keeping plenty of width chances started to come our way. Eventually about half way through the half Lily popped up to open the scoring. Before long this lead was doubled with a great strike from Annabelle. Iona and Lily worked well down the left wing and it was after one of these attacks that Eliza added to the score. Defensively there hadn't been much to do as Emma swept up any lose ball that came into our defending area.
In the second half Chelsea went into goalkeeper giving Scarlett a chance to play on the field. Ellie and Ellen got involved in the midfield putting in some good challenges and Ella who started in defence found herself at centre forward for a while and duly scored her first goal for the senior team.
Abi also played up front and had opportunities to add to the score but it was Annabelle who scored again. Fittingly the final goal of the season was scored by captain Eliza with a cracking shot from a short corner.
Great to finish with a win and well done to everybody.
Final Score Terrington 6 - 0 Easingwold

Out of nowhere we seem to have come around to the final match of the season against Sedbergh. Having played them earlier in the year at a tournament it was a good opportunity to see how we have progressed over the course of the year. We didn't make the best of starts and were soon behind mainly due to poor passing but as the first quarter went on we improved our play and eventually took the lead just before the whistle. Sedbergh had some good tall shooters and it was soon apparent that the best way forward for us was to stop the ball reaching their attacking end.
Alice gave her player plenty of space outside the D and applied the pressure inside forcing her to shoot from further afield, while Emma stuck really close to her own player and at the same time picked up plenty of lose ball as pressure was applied by the midcourt trio on the ball carriers. Once the supply was reduced we worked the ball through the court to our shooters. Iona's passing was excellent and although Annabelle and Angela were a little inconsistent early on but they got better and better. Angela held her space and the movement of Annabelle enabled Iona and Serena to thread the ball through into dangerous areas. By half time we had a lead of six. Sedbergh were weakened as one of their players became injured and was unable to continue, this obviously had an effect on their team.
In the second half we had plenty of possesion and kept up the pressure when we lgave it away. Eliza made some super early passes into the shooters who continued to put the ball through the net. An excellent final quarter saw us build a substantial lead.
It was good to finish the season with a win although it wasn't us at our very best. My congratulations go to the whole squad who have worked hard in practise and reaped the benefits in matches. Serena has lead from the front putting in some fantastic performances along the way but it would not of all been possible without the dedication of Mrs. Tricia Martin.
Final Score Terrington 22 - 7 Sedbergh
