Sports Day Saturday 26th May 2012

Don't Forget Sports Day next Saturday 26th May 2012.

Fingers Crossed the Sun will make an appearance.

What was a sunny day turned into a rather chilly one for rounders.

It was decided that we would play all out and the girls were put into bat. We started off very slowly with a few girls caught out on their first bat, Poppy kicked us off with a cheeky half. The food gates soon opened with some superb batting from Christabel (who got 3 in a row), Amelia slogged it all over the place (totalling 5 rounders), Anna was close behind her with some fantastic placing of the ball and looking for spaces in the field (scored 4 and a half) and Georgina getting 2 well run half rounders. We ended this innings with a very respectable 16 rounders.

Now onto our fielding, since Saturday we seemed to have forgotten how to catch, Cundall had a few good batters who seemed to get the better of some of the deep fielders and they slipped a few rounders passed us early on. We soon, thankfully pulled our socks up and started to play with conviction. There was some excellent communication between Amelia and Georgina and several players were out at first post. Anna oragnised the deep field well and seemed to be everywhere backing up, stopping balls and throwing the ball a very long way. Amy bowled really well at a good pace and very accurately. Unfortunately Emily was injured by the ball and Coco stepped into 2nd post doing a marvellous job stopping those important half rounders. We got Cundall out for 8 rounders, as they had only got half our total we put them back into bat to see if they could beat our score.

Back into the field we had 36 balls to prevent Cundall from matching our score. Amy took a amazing catch early on and a lot of the batters fell at the first hurdle. Cundall again, had a couple of good batters who kept the team going and at the end of their 36 balls we had managed to stop them beating our score.

The final score was 16-14.5 by an innings.

The girls shone particularly when batting and with some more practice positioning themselves in the field they will progress further.

A special mention must go to Amelia and Georgina for some great batting and a fabulous partnership between 1st and backstop. I must also mention Christabel who batted really well with consistency and determination.

An excellent game: Well Done.

A group of Year 5 and 6 boys had the fantastic opportunity to go to Wembley Stadium on Saturday 12th May to watch York City v Newport County with Mr and Mrs Langley. Not only did the boys have a great day they also had the added bonus of watching the FA Trophy being brought home to Bootham Crescent. A huge thankyou to Mr and Mrs McGill for making this possible for the boys.

After a very wet week indeed it was a miracle that this match was able to take place albeit on astro turf. The sun was shining and the girls did not seem at all phased by the fact they we were not playing on grass.

We won the toss and fielded first. We started well with good communication and accurate throwing. The ball travelled a lot faster a long the ground and so when a ball was hit, it went a long way along the ground. This was our downfall in this innings as the girls struggled to adjust to the quicker pace. We managed to keep going and they ended their 27 balls on 8 and a half rounders.

Our batting on Wednesday had not been brilliant and I was concerned that the girls were not going to match St Martin's high score. It is not often like to be proven wrong but thankfully today was the day I was happy to be. The innings was jolted into action by Emily Breese with a superb opening rounder and this seemed to the theme of the rest of the game. The girls ran with conviction and took sensible risks racking up a series of half rounders and full rounders from Anna, Amy and Emma. We drew this innings with 8 and half rounders each.

The girls now knew who from St Martin's could really hit the ball and adjusted their fielding technique accordingly. I was incredibly impressed with the initiative of the girls and there was some superb fielding from Anna, Lucy and Georgina. Poppy took 2 superb catches along with Georgina and Amy taking one each. St Martin's ended their innings with 6 rounders.

The pressure was now on and the girls knew just how close they were to victory. This unfortunately showed and the second post for SMA was proving a hard person to beat, some of the girls made some suicidal runs and at one stage victory was slipping away. Anna, Poppy, Christabel and Amy batted us to victory in the last few balls and at the end of our 27 balls we had scored 7 and a half rounders.

The final score was 16-14.5 to Terrington. This was a very close and hard fought game and it was a pleasure to coach and umpire. I was pleased with the girls tactical play and the huge improvement they showed from Wednesday. Well done girls.

Players of the match has to go to Anna for some superb batting and also Poppy for her phenomenal catches.

A great game with the sun shining down on us!

U10 Rounders v Bramcote Wednesday 9th May

It was a nice change for me to coach and umpire the U10 team today, especially after coaching them last year.

We arrived and quickly got started with Terrington being put into bat. We were playing 27 good balls and so the girls needed to play tactically and make use of every ball good or bad. We started slowly with not a lot of luck in the scoring department. The half rounders crept up with some good running from Amy, Maddy, Coco and Anna. A superb rounder was scored by Georgina who ran her legs off to beat the ball back to 4th post. We finished this innings on 4 rounders, not a huge score but with some tight fielding we could keep Bramcote at bay.

The fielding indeed was tight and the girls played their best both using skill and tactics. Georgina worked hard at backstop but struggled under the sippy grass to get the ball to Coco at first post. There was some superb bowling from Maddy resulting in a great catch for her and also to Georgina. The half rounders were stopped at every ball by Emily at 2nd post well backed up by Anna who captained the team well shouting encouragement and fielding instructions to the team. Bramcote score 1.5 rounders.

The girls still had a lot of work to do with their batting and they needed to remember to take the risks with only a limited number of balls. The girls batting was steady but struggled to get the ball outside the pentagon passed the fielders. Poppy, Georgina and Coco batted well and soon we had racked up another 4 rounders. Our total score was 8.

Fielding had been our strong point in the first innings and the girls were feeling confident. Unfortunately with some inaccurate throwing Bramcote scored some half rounders through poor lines of communication. We battled on and we fought hard but in the last ball Bramcote just slipped past our total and the final score was 8-8.5.

The girls learnt a lot today and I was really pleased with their efforts throughout the match. Keep working hard in practice and hopefully we will get a win on Saturday.

My girl of the match was Emily Breese for her superb fielding at 2nd post, Well done Emily!
