1st XV vs. Durham
Tuesday afternoon found the 1st XV on a cold and windswept Durham hill side. Playing a school of this size was always going to be a tough challenge but with the weather conditions as they were I was concerned that we were going to be in for a very hard afternoon.
However, as they have proved time and again this season, this group of boys are not put off by either the size of the opposition nor the wind, r ain and cold. We started much the stronger and gave Durham a real fright in the first ten minutes. Sadly it was Durham who scored first, however, and they quickly follow with a second. The boys then proved their mettle once again by mounting a come back, a try by Tom Pycock was followed by one from Jack Charters and we were back in it.
At 10 -10 we were pushing for a third when, just as had happened last Saturday, we lost the ball and Durham ran the length of the pitch to score. They scored again almost immediately which really knocked the wind out of the boys' sails. Half time saw them trailing 30 - 10.
The boys stuck to their task in the second half and despite occasionally being a little weak in the tackle managed to stay in the game. Two more tries by Jack Charters, one converted by Charlie Buchanan, and one from Eddie Thompson kept us in the game but we were also conceding at the other end.
The final score of 50 - 27 was probably a fair result but despite the loss I once again walked away very proud of the boys' efforts and very impressed with some of the passages of play.
