Terrington Hall 1st XII vs. The Minster School
Wednesday 14th March saw the 1st team's final opportunity to play together. Our opposition were a potential banana skin and we knew that if we underestimated them we may well find ourselves in trouble.
We started playing quite pleasing rugby but it resembled sevens more than the full version of the game. At times we were guilty of not going forward with the ball and so were caught behind the gain line. However, our stronger runners were able to bash holes in their defence out wide and we were soon racking up the points.
We continued to play well with ball in hand and began to play through the phases which made us very hard to stop. Tries came from Nathan, Saki, Eddie L, Cameron, Joe Nordli (2) Charlie B (3) and Jack (3). Joe N and Charlie B added two conversions each. The Minster School also managed to cross our line four times making the final score 68 - 24 to Terrington.
I have greatly enjoyed working with this group of boys over the course of the season. They have grown as individuals and as a group and I hope that the Y8s continue to involve themselves on the rugby pitch in their future schools and beyond.

U13 7's @ Mowden Hall

U13 7s @ Mowden Hall
Saturday 10th March saw our last opportunity to play competitively before Roslyn Park. We travelled with a depleted squad, the previous two tournaments having taken their toll, determined to enjoy ourselves and see how far we could get.
Bede Academy proved a perfect warm-up match. We played excellent sevens, kept control of the ball and came through with an easy win. Our next outing against St. Olave's produced a different result but some determined play made life difficult from them and our confidence increased once again. Our final group match was against Mowden Hall. We played superbly, showed great determination and won 26 - 14.
This put us in the main competition quarter-final. Merchiston once again displayed some excellent sevens and proved too strong for us. This lined up a plate semi-final against Longridge. They were the surprise package of the group games but seemed to have run out of steam by the time we met them. We took advantage of their lack of defensive organisation and ran away comfortable winners.
The plate final was against Cundall Manor. Again our opposition proved too strong. They defended up in our line and despite trying to drive them back we were unable to establish field position and were quite easily defeated.
With no pressure on the boys they really showed their mettle. The handling errors disappeared and we played some excellent sevens. Plate runners -up was a super result; well done to all of the boys.

U13 Sevens at Durham School

Durham School Sevens
Thursday 8th March saw us travel up to Durham. Despite being tired from their efforts the day before the boys were determined to make up for their poor performances.
Our first match, against Hill House School from Doncaster, gave us an opportunity to hit the ground running. We started strongly and looked certain to score but unfortunately Cameron tripped just short of the line. Hill House responded and broke away to score. Had this gone the other way our day might have been very different. As it was our heads dropped and we let them in for several more scores.
Mount St. Mary's was next. The boys used this opportunity to regain their confidence against a team that had struggled at our home tournament. They did just that running in five unanswered tries. Things were looking up.
The boys continued to look strong in their next game against Barnard Castle. Despite this being a different team to the one they lost to the day before, they still represented a difficult challenge. The boys rose to the job and ran in four tries to win comfortably.
Dame Allen's School were our next opponents. They had some big and fast players who exposed some defensive weaknesses in our team. They won comfortably but had we stepped up defensively this could quite easily have been a different story.
Aysgarth were to be our final group match. Again we fell off the tackles and allowed them far too much time and space. Defeat in this game left us fourth in the group and chasing the plate.
Durham School were our plate semi-final opponents. We played much better in this game but still allowed them too much space. They scored three in the first half which was always going to be a big deficit to chase. The boys started the second half strongly and scored twice. We were in with a shout. However, Durham proved too strong. They scored twice more to win the game 30 - 12.
I hope the boys look more positively on this tournament; when they are good they are great but they must try to bring a consistent approach to their games if they are to show themselves to the very best of their ability.

Terrington Hall Sevens

Terrington Hall 7's
This was a disappointing day. We spoke before the tournament about the need to show ourselves at our very best in our home tournament but unfortunately it did not turn out that way.
Our first outing against Giggleswick set the tone for the day. We played some excellent sevens but were unable to break through. We lost the ball in contact too many times and allowed them to break free to score. Next up was Barnard Castle. Again we looked stronger but were unable to finish our chances. Barnard Castle on the other had made the most of their opportunities to win the game. Aysgarth, the eventual winners, were our next opponents. Despite a better performance we were over-powered and lost this game too. Our final group game was St. Olave's ‘B'. By this point all of our confidence had drained away and another lack-lustre performance led to our fourth straight defeat.
Sometimes things go our way and on other occasions they don't. Wednesday was certainly not our day but hopefully the boys can use their disappointment positively and take it forward into the challenges that lie ahead.

Lewis Booth 7s @ Malsis

1st 7 @ Malsis
It was not so much the cold but the rain that proved our biggest enemy in the opening games of this tournament. Unfortunately though, once the boys were wet it amplified the cold and there was no way of getting dry. This sapped away at both our energy and confidence. Our next biggest challenge was the soft conditions underfoot. There were parts of the pitch where you sank into the mud! Trying to play expansive sevens was never going to be easy. We had to adapt our play and although it took some time to manage this we became more successful as the day went on.
Our first game against St. Martin's Ampleforth caught us a little cold. Some of us were metaphorically still on the bus, others were physically still on their way! St. Martin's hassled us when we had the ball and, as always, once they had possession they kept it. Our defence let us down and we found ourselves on the receiving end of a bit of a hammering.
Our next game was against Malsis. We had beaten them convincingly when we last met but made hard work of this encounter. We let them in for two tries before we realised that throwing the ball around was not an option. Eddie L led the way with a great drive right up the middle of the field. We then became more direct and just managed to score the required three tries to win the game. The final score; 15 - 10 to Terrington.
Our final group game was against Moorlands. We won this easily while taking the opportunity to rest a few players. This left us second in our group and lined up for a cup semi-final against Wisbeech Grammar School.
Wisbeech had a few big strong runners who were going to test our defence and our resolve. The first half was a huge disappointment. Since arriving at Terrington I have always been delighted with the boys' commitment to the tackle but for the first half there was simply no sign of it. They went over for four tries and the game was effectively over. At half time I asked the boys to show some pride and make as much of a match of it as they could. I was delighted with how they responded. They showed their mettle and began to put in some tackles; had we done this from the start there might have been a bit more of a chance of turning them over.
Not our best day, but by the end the boys had experienced playing in adverse conditions and in the second half against Wisbeech proved to themselves that, when you are prepared to give your all, even those things you thought impossible can be made reality.

U12s @ St. Olave's

What a day for the U12 sevens team! This was always going to be steep learning curve for a team which hadn't played or even trained together but after a bit of a shaky start they really rose to the challenge.
Our first game, against St. Olave's, showed us how hard we were going to have to work in defence if we were going to experience any success. Despite scoring a good try through Saki we made two defensive errors and were punished both times. This resulted in a 7 - 14 loss.
Next up was Easingwold. We started to play better sevens and took advantage of their lack of organisation in defence to win 24 - 0 with the tries being scored by Cameron (2) and Gabby (2).
Pocklington School were beginning to look like a well organised team and had easily beaten St. Martin's Ampleforth in their previous game. However, sound defence and excellent ball retention meant that we won comfortably 24 - 0. Cameron and Saki provided the tries.
Our final group game was against St. Martin's. They are always dangerous as they retain possession extremely well. We played some fine sevens however and kept the ball away from them. Cameron and Saki again crossing for tries in a 17 - 0 win.
This left us second in the group and lined up for a cup semi-final against Merchiston. They had looked very impressive in their group and word on the touchlines was that they were favourites to lift the cup. Our sevens play was looking good by now, however, and I always felt we were in with a shout. We defended excellently and, despite not being too clinical with the ball and giving away possession too easily, made the most of our opportunities to win 21 - 7.
A cup final then! Once again we were lined up against St. Olave's. We started strongly with Saki crossing for two tries and turned around at half time with a 14 - 0 lead. In the second half St. Olave's came back strongly and put pressure on us whenever we had the ball. Despite excellent defence once again, their ball retention meant that they eventually broke us down. With 2 minutes to go we were still 14 -7 up but we tired and let them in twice. Their final score was the last act of the match.
To finish as runners up in this tournament is a magnificent effort and all of the squad should be very proud of their efforts; let's hope we can take this form into the Lewis Booth competitions at Malsis on Sunday when we return to our traditional U13 and U11 sides.
Well done to the squad; Cameron Keanurico (capt.), Charlie Buchanan, Eddie Thompson, Saki Kaitoga, Charlie Tannahill, Jack Clark, Gabby McGill, Max Twiddle, Joe Browne and Jordan Beeforth.

Howsham Sevens @ Woodleigh

The first VII squad had a mixed day at the Howsham 7s at Woodleigh. After a bright and very encouraging start we slumped to the depths before sorting ourselves out to lift the plate.
Our first game was against Cundall Manor. Cundall had won this tournament for the last five years so this was always going to be a tough encounter. We started superbly, looked after the ball and probed for gaps. Our defence was strong and at half time we led 12 - 0 through two tries from Cameron and a conversion by Joe. After the break we became a little more careless when in possession and tried to force things a little but held on the win 12 - 7.
Our second group game was against St. Olave's. They played a well disciplined and expansive game which exposed us out wide. Despite two converted tries, one for Eddie L. and one for Charlie B. we lost 31 - 14.
Time then to pick ourselves up against Read; unfortunately the boys stopped playing as a team, tried to make things happen, instead of being patient', and attempted to force gaps against a team who were not afraid to tackle. Despite coming back strongly towards the end we had let them score too many tries and lost 24-17. Our tries came from Charlie T. and Joe and Cameron.
Our final group game was against Moorlands School. They had lost all of their games and so this looked like being a simple task. However we made hard work of it once again. We did not control the ball or retain possession as we had in our first game. They had two big, strong runners and we allowed them time to build their momentum which made them hard to stop. We scraped through with a 22-17 win however and found ourselves placed a disappointing fourth in the group. Tries were scored by Charlie T. Cameron and two by Tom P.
This meant a Plate semi-final against Malsis. I am delighted to report that the boys decided to rediscover their style and discipline during this game and as a result the tries flowed. We controlled the game from start to finish, looked after the ball and pulled Malsis around the pitch until the gaps appeared. These gaps were then exploited by Cameron who scored two, Charlie T. and Tom P. who scored a hat-trick! The final score, 32 - 5, was a fair reflection of our dominance and superior rugby.
This lined up a Plate final against Read. Having already lost to them in the group it was time to set the record straight. The boys did just that. Real sevens was on display and we ran them ragged. Tries by Eddie L. Nathan, Joe, Cameron and Charlie T. contributed to a 25 - 5 victory and an immensely satisfying end to the day.
Lessons are there to be learned and hopefully the boys will do just that before our next outing at Malsis on Sunday. Well done to all and thanks to those parents who made it to Woodleigh for their support.

U9 vs Mowden Hall

U9 Football vs. Mowden Hall
We started this game very strongly with a great goal from Josh Gath. We then took our feet off the pedal a little and allowed them into the game, however some excellent defending from George Welch and saves from Harry Lister kept them down to just one goal. We scored again before half time through a well placed, left footed strike by James Barker. The 2 -1 lead at half time flattered them somewhat.
After half time we began to exert some control, clever passing and use of the wide spaces meant we extended our lead to 5 - 1 with Josh Gath scoring two and James Barker one. We then relaxed again and allowed them 2 more goals before James Barker completed his hat trick to put the game out of sight.
An excellent performance and a worthy 6 - 3 victory.

U9 Football vs Easingwold Town FC

U9 Football vs. Easingwold Town FC
Last Saturday saw us host Easingwold Town's U9 football squad. They brought a large number of players which gave us the opportunity to play two games. Although we lost both of the games we played good football, moving and passing intelligently and creating lots of chances. Easingwold's first choice team were very strong but as they began to make changes the sides evened out a little.
I was greatly impressed with our boys and am confident that when we move back to playing similar sized schools, the standard of our football will begin to yield results. I am greatly looking forward to our trip to Mowden on Wednesday.
