U9 Rugby vs. Aysgarth
Saturday 12th November
This was my first opportunity to work with the U9 squad and by the end of the afternoon I was delighted by all aspects of the boys' performance and very hopeful for the future.
We started strongly, with George Welch scoring straight from the kick off. However, they soon responded with a score of their own. Terrington came back with another try from George before Aysgarth began to take control. They took advantage of our lack of organisation in defence and managed to score four more tries before half time.
Our second half was much better. Terrington tries came from Billy, Archie, Nat and Harry and our defence was much stronger. Aysgarth also scored four in the second half making the final score 30 points to 50 in favour of our visitors.
I was very impressed with our tackling in this game. Adam Reid and Rory Watt deserve a special mention for their contributions in this area; both boys tackled their man and saved some certain scores with their efforts. George Welch, Billy Watkinson and Harry Lister were strong both in defence and attack and some super running from Nat Esler and Joshua Gath ensured that we were going forward when in possession. Archie Hobson performed his task excellently and rucked the ball time and again to secure possession. His support play was excellent and he was rewarded for his efforts with a try. Henry Thompson also performed admirably and enjoyed a couple of opportunities to run with the ball.
The boys should now focus on their positional play, especially in defence, and try not to follow the ball across the pitch. They should also try to pass the ball more and straighten their lines of running. However, all of these things come with experience and maturity, there is the potential here for a very good team in the future and I look forward to working with them as they move higher up through the school.
