Terrington Hall’s music department is housed in a converted chapel near the school playing fields with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. Music plays a vital and enjoyable part of school life here at Terrington. With the aim of developing our pupils into discerning listeners, we offer many opportunities for them to learn and participate in all areas of music-making.

Class music is taught from Nursery up to Year 8 under the Performing Arts programme. In the early years especially, the subject is explored alongside Drama enabling the pupils to engage with the subject physically as well as aurally. In the later years, the syllabus ranges over music notation, dynamics, pitch, timbre and rhythm, as well as improvisation and composition. It develops an appreciation of orchestral instruments, delivering hands-on percussion sessions in pitched and non-pitched instruments.

Instrumental lessons are offered in piano, singing, flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, violin, cello, guitar (classical and electric), percussion, trumpet, cornet, euphonium, horn, trombone and bagpipes. All teachers are well-qualified and enter pupils for Associated Board Exams where appropriate.

Alongside our Concert Band we have several ensembles including senior and junior choirs, woodwind and brass groups, and a rock band. Students perform regularly at school concerts at Christmas and at the end of the Summer terms. The choir and band perform at church services for school events and also within the local community. Recently this has included performances at All Saints Church, Castle Howard and The Abbey residential home. There are also visits to other schools for workshops and concerts.

There are many other opportunities for our pupils to perform as soloists, whether in the interhouse instrumental competition, in our Pre-Prep and Prep-School assemblies, or informally in music recitals held in The Study.

Each year, pupils have ample opportunity to participate in musical productions. Pre-Prep have their annual Summer term production, whilst recent shows by the Prep-School pupils have included Oliver, Grease, The Wiz, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, We Will Rock You, The Adventures of Mr Toad, The Ragged Child, Bugsy Malone and Peter Panto.
