Whilst a child’s intellectual development is of tremendous importance, sport plays a key role not only in promoting physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle, but also in developing those life skills which every parent would want for their child.

At an individual level, these skills might include striving to perform our best, perhaps to the limits of our endurance; at an interpersonal level, it would involve skills surrounding communication, teamwork and leadership; at any level it would include those qualities of sportsmanship that bring out the best in us: graciousness, empathy, loyalty, generosity of spirit, tenacity, resilience.

Sport at Terrington Hall is inclusive and seeks to encourage both individual excellence and team spirit, whilst offering opportunity to all.

Recognising that sporting talent emerges and develops at different rates, every child from Year 3, regardless of ability, represents the school regularly in inter-school matches. They play at a level that makes it enjoyable which helps foster confidence and self-esteem.

Inevitably, as with academic performance, there are those who display exceptional talent. This is to be encouraged and celebrated, just as the contributions of the ‘weaker’ members are to be applauded. Generosity of spirit is the essence of sportsmanship, and a hallmark, we would like to think, of sport at our school.

Terrington’s broad sporting programme includes: Rugby, Football and Cricket for boys; Hockey, Netball and Rounders for girls; Cross Country, Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, Table Tennis, Tennis, Athletics, Water Polo and Swimming for both; all are coached and played to a high level with enjoyment of participation remaining key. In addition, extensive use is made of the indoor cricket nets and climbing wall.

Talented pupils play at the highest level and we are committed to ensuring that pupils with real potential will be encouraged to trial for local academies such as the Yorkshire Carnegie Academy (rugby) and for county representation.

In recent years, a number of our pupils have been selected for the England Netball Performance Pathway programme, North Yorkshire and Yorkshire cricket and have won selection for the finals of the National Preparatory Schools Athletics Championships and for the North East Independent Schools Football Association squad. In addition, in recent years our U13 rounders team has twice reached the finals of the RNCF national rounders competition.
