Terrington Hall's Christmas fair

The Yorkshire Vet Peter Wright and local children’s author Catherine Jacobs added a touch of celebrity to this year’s Christmas Fair, a hugely successful occasion enjoyed by parents, pupils, friends and visitors to the school.

Before attending the fair, Catherine gave a reading of her new book ‘Santa’s Special Gift’ to Pre-prep and Years 3 and 4. They were spellbound by the story of how Kitty was whisked off to the North Pole by Santa Claus and to hear of her adventures there. Catherine’s dramatic reading of the beautiful rhyming text gained the children’s rapt attention throughout. After the reading, their hands shot up to ask how she had become an author and how she could possibly write so many words!

Down at the fair, the hall was thronged with guests and shoppers browsing the festive stalls, enjoying the café and appreciating performances by the Senior Choir and School Band. For the younger fair-goers there was the added excitement of visiting Santa’s Grotto, beautifully decked out with reindeer and twinkling lights. Older pupils mobbed the ‘grab-a-jar’ stall, marvelled at the whacky stationery on ‘If’ and crowded round ‘Universal Geek’ (everything Harry Potter).

Many people took the opportunity to meet and chat with the Yorkshire Vet Peter Wright who attended the fair with his wife Lin and was kept busy signing copies of his new book ‘My Yorkshire Great and Small’. Peter took particular interest in the pupils who came up and spoke with him, which several bravely did, whether to talk about their desire to be a vet or to say how much they enjoyed watching him in Channel 5’s The Yorkshire Vet. To all, he gently pressed home the point that hard work is the key to success.

Reflecting on the afternoon, he said, ‘Lin and I have really enjoyed our afternoon here. It is clear to see the happiness of all the children and staff and we have been made to feel very welcome.’
