Hands-on Classics Day at Fettes College

Year 7 were transported to a world of Centurian training, mosaics and the snake-haired Medusa when they journeyed to Fettes College for a Classics Day.

The Edinburgh school’s impressive Gothic buildings, rumoured to be the inspiration for Hogwarts, proved a perfect setting for time travel back to the age of Greek mythology and Roman adventure.

Our welcoming hosts laid on five Classics-related workshops, spread across the Fettes grounds and all linked to the theme of Medusa, one of the fearsome Gorgons in early Greek literature.

Year 7 threw themselves into the activities, which consisted of: Roman Legionary training, mosaic making, storytelling, pottery examination and performance art.

The storytelling segment was a real treat, with the audience held rapt by a professional storyteller’s depiction of Medusa’s grisly fate.

Our pupils mingled with other schools when rotating around the workshops but were reunited for a splendid lunchtime Roman banquet, as well as a close-run Latin vocabulary competition at the end of the day.

Thank you to Fettes College for laying on such an enjoyable and informative event.

When our daughter comes home from school it’s like a breath of fresh air listening to her talk all about her day!
