History, culture and fun for Year 8 in the Netherlands

The final residential trip for Year 8s summed up our Expanding Horizons promise perfectly. It delivered plenty of history and culture – as well as the life-affirming joy that comes from travelling and exploring with friends.

They first acclimatised to country with a trip to Zaanse Schans, a heritage village of historic windmills and wooden houses, a wooden shoe workshop, cheese farm and more.

Even the non-football fans were wowed by their tour of AFC Ajax’s magnificent stadium. They followed in legendary players’ footsteps from locker rooms to pitch, as well as viewing the facilities and staging their own press conference.

Anne Frank’s House and the city’s museums provided lots to discuss and consider.

The group took a leisurely cruise along Amsterdam’s canals, to see for themselves the landmarks which have inspired so many artists over the years. They also learned about the Dutch capital’s rich trading history through the merchant houses lining the routes.

The trip concluded with a much-anticipated visit to the Efteling Theme Park, a celebration of ancient European myths and legends, fairy tales, and folklore – with enough rollercoaster rides to satisfy both the thrill-seekers and their friends on the ground!
