Old Terringtonians celebrate our 40 Years of Co-Education

Old Terringtonians gathered to reminisce and revisit old haunts in a celebration of 40 years of girls at Terrington Hall.

Attendees included the first girls to arrive at Terrington Hall when we became co-educational in 1986, as well as the boys who described being “terrified and fascinated” by the females in their midst. The first girl to be awarded the title of prefect was also here with her proud mum.

The former pupils and enjoyed looking at old photos of their time here in the 1990s, together with the annual Terringtonian magazines capturing the main events of each year.

Also present were pupils and teachers from as far back as the 1950s, along with former parents and governors. All the pupils were boarders in those days and they had plenty of tales to tell.

After lunch on the lawn, our Year 7 children appeared to conduct tours of the school. They were captivated (and we hope not inspired!) by tales of the former pupils’ antics.

We were pleased that the Old Terringtonians were extremely complimentary about our children’s behaviour and politeness, with one saying: “I was struck by how the pupils were so polite, introduced themselves, shook hands and hand an air of confidence. These principles have not changed one iota since my day: delighted to see.”

Everyone then gathered by the cricket pitches to watch U11 matches against Bootham School with a glass of Pimms. The fantastic views over the Howardian Hills prompted memories of the legendary, tough cross country runs up to the Skyline, since known by pupils as the Triangle and today referred to as the Hay Bales.

We very much enjoyed welcoming the Old Terringtonians of all vintages, some of whom who had travelled from far and wide to join this special occasion. We hope they’ll keep in touch – and we look forward to hosting more similar events in the future.
