Our community celebrates Mr Magson

We marked the first anniversary of the death of Art teacher Phil Magson with events for everyone in our community which reflected the passions of our much-missed colleague.

Prep School pupils celebrated Mr Magson’s love of ceramics by creating individual clay tiles, decorated with their initials. These will be painted, glazed and turned into a giant wordsearch installation for everyone to enjoy over the coming weeks and months. Pre-Prep children will also be creating tiles to add to the installation.

Year 5 pupils spent their PSHE lesson thinking about the words they associate with Mr Magson, which prompted amusing anecdotes and some beautiful illustrated hearts.

All the children loved the lunch-time Art Challenge when, armed with chalk, they decorated the playground with feel-good creations.

The adults took centre-stage in the evening, when parents’ group the Friends of Terrington Hall hosted a Quiz Night, inspired by Mr Magson’s love of a nerdy fact challenge. His good friend and colleague Nick Witteveen pulled together some suitably tough questions and delighted in his role as scathing quizmaster at the event, held in the Terrington Village Hall.

More than 100 parents, alumni, colleagues and friends feasted on pie and mash and enjoyed the  evening of trivia – both general knowledge (not too many audible arguments but plenty of light ribbing!) and Phil-specific (much laughter finding out some of his adventures in his younger days!).

The evening raised a further £1,600 for the Leeds Hospitals Charity and was a very sociable evening which we hope will become an annual event.

The Friends of Terrington Hall would like to thank Thornton’s of Easingwold for the pies, the Terrington Hall catering staff for pulling everything together, and the Terrington Village Hall team. An extra thank you, too, for everyone who attended. You can contribute to the JustGiving fund here.

The pastoral care is excellent, with brilliant open communication with parents around any concerns.
