Speech Day celebrates children’s success
We celebrated the many successes of children across the school in our annual Speech Day, an event which was also attended by families, governors and other friends of Terrington Hall.
The effort and achievements of children from Year 1 to Year 8 were marked by the presentation of 75 prizes recognising academic and co-curricular excellence as well as effort.
The event followed an earlier prize-giving ceremony in which 67 prizes were presented to children who excelled in school life.
The Heads of School, Year 8 pupils Beatrice and Olivia, welcomed everyone to the event and fondly shared their memories of life at Terrington Hall.
Chair of Governors Katherine Lamont reviewed a momentous year which saw Terrington Hall merge with Sedbergh School as a founding member of the Sedbergh Schools Group. She spoke of the many advantages of our shared values and ‘stronger together’ outlook, which has supercharged our future as a prep school.
Dan Harrison, Executive Head, and Baz Bennett, Chief Operating Officer of the Sedbergh Schools Group, were among those attending our Speech Day, and Mrs Lamont thanked them and their colleagues for working so well with Terrington Hall to effect a smooth transition.
The prize-giving ceremony followed, in which form prizes were distributed across the Pre-Prep, Lower Prep and Upper Prep. Year 8 Academic Awards followed, then the Upper Prep Co-Curricular awards.
Headmaster’s Prizes for the pupils who displayed our school values of Kindness, Confidence and Courage were presented, as well as various prizes for significant achievements across the school.
The Heads of Houses, Isabel (Castle), Will (Forest) and Theo (Moor) raised many laughs with their quips about school life and – or course – their arguments in favour of which House was the best.
Headmaster Huw Thomas had a hard act to follow but tried his best with a humorous assessment of his efforts to be accepted Up North and his mastering of the local dialect.
He thanked parents for their support this year, in particular their willingness to work together with the school for the benefit of their children. Parents’ group the Friends of Terrington Hall were also praised for their tremendous friend- and fundraising efforts. Rebecca, from the Friends, spoke about the group and thanked departing chair Mark for his huge contribution.
A surprise pupil medley performance of Abba’s best songs had everyone singing along with enthusiasm at the end of the event. The feel-good burst of energy was the perfect ending to a celebration of our very special community.
Everyone then gathered on the front lawn for drinks, reminiscences and the inevitable shirt-signing for the departing Year 8 pupils.

We cannot thank you enough for the tremendous hard work and effort that is put into providing our children with such a happy place to learn and grow. If we could do it all again, we would not hesitate.
