Upper Prep present Guys and Dolls!
Upper Prep children swept us back to 1950s New York City with an exhilarating production of Guys and Dolls Jr which fizzed with energy and joy from start to finish.
The production was kindly hosted by Ampleforth College in its theatre, and the children’s exposure to this ‘professional’ setting allowed their talent to be showcased to its fullest potential.
There was much singing, movement and dancing throughout, with a mixture of solos, groups and full cast numbers. Every one of the actors embraced their roles (and American accents!) with gusto in this fun-filled story about friendship, love and taking chances.
We were immersed in a thrilling world of gamblers, missionaries and Hot Box Girls, portrayed with astounding ease and maturity by this young cast. Unlikely friendships and surprises round every corner meant the characters learned important lessons about honesty, teamwork and self-belief.
There were some outstanding displays of Terrington Confidence from some of our lead characters. Will, Harry, Jess, Iris, Rose, Emilia, Monty, Theo, Max and Albert led dynamically across the wider stage, creating some absolutely fantastic scenes.
A highlight for all was Monty’s rendition of ‘Sit down you’re rocking the boat’ with the cast together on stage, bringing the chaos of the gambling world to full focus before this unlikely community settled into a more peaceful way of life.
This feel-good musical, which celebrated cooperation, kindness and following your heart, was expertly choreographed by Director of Performing Arts Mrs Dance, with Miss Wilson and Mrs Thomas.
The backstage crew worked hard to ensure smooth set-changes and impeccable lighting and sound. The props and staging arranged Mrs MacNicol and her trusty band of helpers were amazing, effortlessly transporting us out of the North Yorkshire Hills and into the hidden world of 1950s Manhattan.
The school is committed to nurturing each child and helping them flourish and discover their ‘flair’, whatever that may be.
