VE Day Commemorations with the community

Our local community joined us for a special service to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day, marking the end of the Second World War in Europe.

The service was part of a day when we all reflected on the sacrifices made during the war, as well as the way communities came together to support each other throughout.
We were joined on the front lawn by parents, children from Terrington Primary School, plus our local friends and neighbours for a short service of commemoration led by our village rector, Rev’d Douglas Robertson and our own Rev’d, Claire Stubbs.

Children read their own poems reflecting on the sacrifices made at home and abroad, as well as the huge relief and celebration as the war drew to a close.

Year 7 pupil Aidan was joined by Mr Woodrow and Miss Wilson to play the Last Post and Reveille, followed by a minute’s silent reflection and the laying of a wreath by local resident Major Mike Blunt.

The service was recorded as part of BBC Radio York’s coverage of VE Day events, and our children spoke to reporter Hannah Sackville-Bryant about what the day meant to them.

Year 5 children are learning about World War II as part of this term’s cross-curriculum Discovery topic. Discussions about their personal family memories of World War II continued in classrooms across the day.
