The Nursery Curriculum

Developing skills for life

Our Nursery class follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). This sets the standards to help your child develop the key skills they need to thrive. We’re very ‘hands-on’ and ensure children learn through real experiences – tangible, engaging activities that can be flexed or extended to excite, inspire and meet individual learning needs.

How is the EYFS structured?

The EYFS is built around three prime areas that will help your child to lay the foundations of a successful time at Terrington Hall:

  • Personal and Social Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

These are combined with four specific areas:

  • Literacy – Reading and Writing
  • Mathematics – Number, Shape, Space and Measure
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Art and Design

Expanding Horizons at our independent school

In the Nursery, we also keep things fresh and engaging by changing our topics every couple of weeks or so. That topic then runs as a thread through everything we do.

Topics are often based around a book or seasonal celebration that helps to engage everyone. They form the basis of many of our daily activities, helping children to develop a love for reading and books, as well as explore a range of themes.

Our daughter absolutely loved her time in Nursery and she left so well-prepared for Reception, thanks to your dedication and brilliant teaching.
