On a glorious Wednesday afternoon, in their super special Wooden Spoon socks the U8 girls geared up for their first hockey match, away at Cundall Manor. Before the game started it was clear the girls were nervous with questions ranging from 'How do I hold my stick again?' to 'What do I do if my skirt falls down?'. Fortunately, Cundall Manor's girls were equally as nervous so Bev, their hockey development coach, took the lead umpiring so that myself and two members of staff from Cundall were able to swiftly manoeuvre the players into positions they needed to be in whilst, I had the job of swapping my girls on and off!

From the off, it was very much the classic bee's around a honey pot, as all 12 players tried their hardest to get the ball from the middle of the pack. Thea, Annabel and Lily showed off their tenacity, as they seemed to be able to find their way through with the greatest amount of ease, whilst Sophia, Darcie and Connie, all found spaces ahead for passes to go to. As with many U8 matches there was a great enthusiasum thrown into the game, but this in turn meant there was an equal amount of tears and minor injuries to deal with, thankfully we had the substitutes to cope. Emily T and Emliy R both had some fantastic opporunities on goal, as did Thea, but it just didn't seem to go our wall, as we missed by the smallest of margins. Unfortunately for us, Cundall in the very last moments of the match seemed to find their way through and scored the one and only goal of the match.

Despite the game ending in a very narrow loss, it was a very exciting start to the hockey careers for the U8 girls with many showing some sign of great potiental. I am sure that under the care of Miss Ramlin and Miss Diggory, the girls will become increaingly more confident, and those chances found in todays match will quickly become goals on the team sheet.

Well done to all.
