Mr Stephen Mulryne
BEd (Hons) English Literature, Liverpool
Stephen was educated at St Olaveâs and St Peterâs York. His first teaching post was at Catterall Hall, then the Prep School to Giggleswick. In 2004 he moved to Terra Nova Preparatory School in Cheshire where, over the course of seven years, he held the titles of Middle School Coordinator, Head of History and Head of Boarding. Stephen was appointed Deputy Headmaster of Terrington Hall in September 2011 and succeeded Jon Glen as Headmaster in January 2015. He is joined by his wife Helen and their two children. A keen sportsman, Stephen plays cricket in a local evening league and follows cricket, rugby league and union and football. He also enjoys hill walking and camping trips away with his family.
Mrs Helen Mulryne
Headmasterâs Wife and Cover Teacher

Helenâs teaching career has encompassed being nursery teacher, drama teacher and special educational needs teacher. An integral part of school life, Helenâs role involves teaching all age groups and providing pastoral support to children and a link to parents and the wider Terrington Hall family. In addition to her front of house role at school events, Helen also runs the weekly Parent, Baby and Toddler Group. In her spare time, Helen enjoys long walks with her two rescue pups, spending time with family and friends and reading murder mystery and historical fiction books. She is also a lifelong fan of Wigan Warriors and loves everything to do with Christmas!
Ms Suzy Ward
Deputy Head and Year 8 Form Tutor

Suzy recently moved to Terrington Hall after falling in love with the school (and Yorkshire) during a summer visit to Terrington. Having previously worked in a variety of other schools, teaching pupils from Year One through to Year Eight, she has held positions in Gifted and Talented, Inclusion, Boarding and, most recently, as Head of Academics at Terra Nova School. As Deputy Head, she has responsibility for the day-to-day running of the school and all pastoral matters. In addition, Suzy teaches Year 6 Maths and English. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her children, sewing and taking long walks near the sea.
Mr Adrian Upton
Adrian joined Terrington Hall in 2011 having worked at St Peterâs, Bootham, Abbotsholme and Ackworth Schools. Apart from keeping Terringtonâs finances in order, he is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, catering and cleaning of the school and for all health and safety issues. He plays cricket locally, is involved with York Round Table and enjoys walking and cycling.
Mr Stuart Keens

Stuart joined Terrington Hall in January 2015, prior to which he was the Senior Deputy Headmaster at Confucius International School, Qingdao, China. Previously he taught in Qatar and Saudi Arabia. In addition to many years of leadership experience, Stuart brings to the school significant data analysis experience. A keen distance runner, he coaches cross country, has initiated STEM and Microbit clubs, and has introduced the school to Mathletics and the World Education Games. Outside school, he enjoys spending time with his wife and twin children, tinkering on computers, camping and playing chess.
Mrs Claire Grant
Head of Upper Prep, Designated Safeguarding Lead, Head of Modern Foreign Languages, Year 6 Form Tutor
BA (Hons) Spanish and French, Manchester Met; PGCE York St John
Claireâs career spanned international banking, recruitment for a French company and jointly running a girlsâ boarding house at St Peterâs York before retraining and entering teaching. Having taught in a state primary in York, Claire joined Terrington Hall in 2005 as a French teacher and took the existing Spanish provision through to CE. In her role as Senior Mistress, Claire is responsible for organising the staff appraisal system, the co-ordination of peer observation and book scrutiny, and is involved in the recruitment of new staff. As Designated Safeguarding Lead, she updates all necessary policies and ensures that all staff are trained in child protection issues. In addition, she runs the tennis and swimming teams and mentors student teachers and NQTs. She is responsible for co-ordinating fundraising for the school charity and co-ordinates the post-CE programme for Year 8. An inveterate traveller, Claire enjoys walking, entertaining, reading and drinking copious amounts of coffee.
Miss Claire Knights
Head of Lower Prep, Year 3 Class Teacher
BA Primary Education (with QTS) Maths and Geography, Bangor University
Claire spent the first four years of her teaching career at Hazlegrove Preparatory School in Somerset. She joined the Terrington Hall family in 2015 as Year 3 class teacher, and coaches girls' games. Claire became a teacher after spending time volunteering in South Africa and Uganda with charities which specialised in working in outreach centres for those living below the breadline and where they believe that education can change lives. Claire similarly hopes to inspire those in her care. In her spare time Claire enjoys cooking, crafting and going on walks with her partner Cai, especially in the Lake District.
Mrs Rachel Wood
Head of Pre-Prep and Year 2 Class Teacher

Rachel joined Terrington Hall in 2010 and spent a number of enjoyable years teaching Reception and coaching U9 girlsâ games. Appointed Head of Pre-Prep and Year 2 class teacher in 2015, Rachel is passionate about delivering the very best start for every child and leads a dedicated team of Early Years professionals. Rachelâs love of singing and the theatre come to life through her involvement in the wonderful Pre-Prep productions. Other interests include crafting and walks at the coast â although Rachelâs free time is now mostly devoted to her beautiful daughter Daisy.

Mrs Katie Bazire-Smith
Year 5 Class Teacher

Katieâs husband Rob is in the Army, so she has experienced life in many parts of the UK as well as two years living in Germany. After settling in York in 2016, children William and Annabel started at Terrington Hall. Katie was delighted to join the team in 2017. With a talent for creative writing, Katie is passionate about developing the childrenâs love of reading. Katie has written five childrenâs books to date â fingers crossed her ambition to become a published author will soon come to fruition. Katie also enjoys pilates and circuit training.
Mrs Rebecca Boote

Having started her teaching career in London working in both mainstream and Special Educational Needs settings, Rebecca went on to teach in International schools in both The Netherlands and Dubai. A career break saw her complete a Diploma in Food and Wine before going on to help establish a successful local business. Rebecca is delighted to join the team at Terrington Hall and is enjoying teaching the Reception class. Daughter Jessica is now in Year 1, having started at the school in Nursery. Together they enjoy long walks with their dog Jack.
Mr Alex Crockett
Head of Boys' Games
Alex came to Terrington with many yearsâ rugby and sports coaching experience. He signed his first professional Rugby contract aged 18 with Bath where he played for nine years. During this time he represented England U21s and England Saxons, was club captain for the 2008/2009 season and coached rugby at Millfield School. He has also played for Bristol, Worcester Warriors and Newcastle Falcons. During his rugby playing days he completed a âteaching sport in an independent schoolâ course and qualified as a swimming teacher and lifeguard. An RFU Level 3 qualified coach, he coached at St Peterâs York, Pocklington and York University before joining Terrington Hall in January 2015. Married to Monique with two energetic sons, Digby and Basil, his spare time is taken up with family and anything to do with sport. In another life this included golf and fishing!
Mrs Mia Cross
Year 4 Class Teacher
BA (Hons) English Literature and QTS, Leeds University
Mia started her career teaching in 1991 in a church school in Skipton. She has had teaching and management experience in Kuwait, Dubai and Qatar in large international schools and has also worked in UK Prep Schools in Bristol, Gloucestershire and Suffolk. Prior to joining Terrington Hall in November 2016 to cover Mrs Woodâs maternity leave, Mia was Head of Pre-Prep and a KS1 teacher at Old Buckenham Hall School in Lavenham for six years. Outside school, she enjoys travelling, going to the theatre, reading and spending time with her three lovely children and miniature Yorkshire terrier, Pudding.
Miss Olivia Diggory
Year 4 Class Teacher

Olivia was educated at St Olaveâs and St Peterâs York. A keen traveller with a passion for learning about cultures and languages, she relished the opportunity to study in Salzburg, which included a teaching placement in an international class. In addition to working five summers in the United States, Olivia spent summer 2017 leading a teen leadership programme that worked with the Sioux YMCA on the Cheyenne River Reservation. She felt thoroughly at home on her teaching placement at Terrington Hall in 2016, so is absolutely delighted to return to the school as Year 4 Class Teacher. Olivia enjoys teaching because it is âfun, creative and meaningfulâ. With a love of the outdoors and hobbies such as camping and snowboarding, Oliviaâs spare time sounds every bit as exciting and action-packed as her teaching.

Mrs Camilla Jowett
Science and Humanities Teacher
BA Joint Hons Archaeology and Ancient History, Nottingham University.
Camilla grew up in North Yorkshire and was educated at Queen Maryâs School, and then Uppingham School for the Sixth Form. Following a gap year when she taught in a Kenyan school, she studied Archaeology and Ancient History at Nottingham University, then a PGCE in Primary Education at Roehampton. Camilla has taught children across all primary school ages, both in state and private settings, as well as working as a Curriculum Consultant for the London Grid for Learning. Her most recent post prior to joining Terrington Hall was at Devonshire House Preparatory School, (Hampstead, London). Here, Camilla was an Assistant Deputy Head and a Year Two Class Teacher. Camilla is delighted to have returned to settle in Yorkshire. She first came across Terrington Hall when she brought her children to the Playgroup and was inspired to apply for a teaching position. Camilla loves running, walking in the countryside, reading and spending time with her friends and family.
Mr Philip Magson
Head of Art
Phil ran a small pottery business in York before taking up teaching and joining Terrington Hall as a Year 4 class teacher, followed by a spell as Head of Maths. As Head of Art Phil has found his niche inspiring pupils from Year 1 to Year 8 to trust their imaginations and âhave a goâ. As well as being responsible for the set designs for the termly stage productions and organising the Summer Art Exhibition, Phil coaches football and cricket. Married to Anna-Marie with a son and a daughter, he owns and bakes at Leaf and Loaf cafĂ© in Welburn where he also makes and sells pottery. He is a lifelong Leeds United supporter, horse racing enthusiast, geography geek and travel and art lover.
Mr Paul Mulryne
Head of English, Year 8 Form Tutor, Safeguarding Deputy

Paul began his career as a secondary school teacher in York and Hull before joining Moorlands Preparatory School in Leeds where he was initially Head of English, before becoming Deputy Head. He joined Terrington in January 2015. He is U11 rugby coach, a Year 8 Form Tutor and assistant housemaster In the boarding house. Paul has two children Connor and Katie and enjoys reading, cycling and writing his own stories and poems.
Mr Simon Pickering
Head of Science
BSc (Hons) Geology, University of Manchester; PGCE University of Leeds.
After leaving University, Simon worked as a Geochemist in the oil industry. In 1997, his first teaching post was as a Chemistry teacher in North Lincolnshire. Simon then became Head of Science at a Prep School in North Yorkshire where he was also Head of Geography and a Boarding Master. Before joining Terrington Hall School, Simon was Head of Science and Resident Boarding Tutor at a Prep School in Cheshire. He has now returned to his native Yorkshire.
Simon likes many sports including football, rugby, swimming and cricket. He is a long-standing supporter of Leeds United and Leeds Rhinos. In his spare time, Simon is an active participant with the scout movement and he enjoys a wide variety of outdoor activities. During school holidays, he can often be found undertaking DIY projects at home. Simon is married with two sons, and he enjoys exploring new places with his family.
Mr Ryan O'Ehley
Director of Performing Arts
Three-year Acting and Musical Theatre Diploma, Mountview Conservatoire for the Performing Arts; BSc (Hons) Applied Accounting, Oxford Brookes; ACCA
Ryanâs role at Terrington includes teaching music and drama from Nursery to Year 8, directing the schoolâs plays and musical productions, leading the Senior Choir and Band and taking individual singing and piano lessons. Before joining Terrington in 2015, Ryan was a professional singer and actor and also taught at Performing Arts Academies in London, including The Urdang Academy, London Studio Centre and Sylvia Youngâs Theatre School. He is also a qualified accountant! In his spare time Ryan is the Musical Director of Bulmer Choir and plays the church organ in Welburn. He enjoys exploring the Howardian Hills with his young family.
Miss Laura Ramli
Nursery Class Teacher

Laura has worked in private day nurseries for the past four years. Her training in Forest Education and experience working as a Forest School Leader has stimulated Lauraâs interest in outdoor learning. She is looking forward to combining a varied programme of classroom activities with valuable nature-based learning for the benefit of the nursery children. Laura plays hockey for City of York Ladies 4th team and is excited to coach U9 hockey at Terrington Hall. She also enjoys camping, skiing and spending time with her partner, Luke, family and friends.
Mrs Kelly Roberts

Kelly has ten yearsâ teaching experience at schools across Yorkshire. Prior to joining Terrington Hall, Kelly was Head of Hockey and led Pre-Prep PE at Wakefield Girls High School. She enjoys playing Hockey and Netball and has previously played at county and national level. Kelly has also represented the North of England at Gymnastics. Kelly enjoys family time with her husband, new baby son and two stepchildren â as well as walking in the countryside with her Bulldog Dexter. Kelly loves playing and watching sport and one day would love to attend an event at the Olympics.
Mr Oliver Sigsworth

Oliver grew up in the Ryedale area and is a proud Yorkshireman. Following his education at Lady Lumleyâs in Pickering, he gained a degree in English Literature from York St. John University. Oliver is passionate about reading and passing this enjoyment onto the children he teaches. More recently, he returned to York St. John to complete his PGCE. Aside from reading, Oliverâs biggest passion is sport and he is looking forward to coaching the students at Terrington. At the weekend, Oliver plays for Thornton le Dale Cricket Club. When cricket season comes to a close you will either find him on the football field, running or cycling. He also spends time walking in the countryside with his partner Tori. During the school holidays, Oliver enjoys traveling the world. He has even spent a year living and working in Australia. He is looking forward to completing his first year of teaching at Terrington.

Claire was born in Sheffield where she returned to start her teaching career in a small CE Primary school before working at Westbourne Prep School as Head of Music for four years. Claire has been at Terrington Hall since 2005 and has worked throughout the school both as a subject teacher and as a form teacher in Years 6, 5, 3 and, currently, in Year 1. She leads the Junior Choir and is accompanist for the Senior Choir. Out of school Claire enjoys being Church Organist, is a worship leader and also helps with Messy Church. In her spare time Claire enjoys baking and going glamping and visiting places of interest with her partner Colin.

Mr Nick Witteveen
Head of Classics
BA (Hons) Classics and Philosophy, Newcastle University
Nick is a proud Dutch Lancastrian (hence the ridiculous surname) who started teaching down south in 1995 after graduating in Classics and Philosophy. He returned north in 2000 to join Terrington as Head of Classics and has since taught Latin, Greek, French, English, History and Mathematics as well as coaching a variety of sports. Outside the classroom, he enjoys Burnley FC, Lancashire and Whitwell cricket clubs and Malton and Norton Rugby. Other interests include cryptic crosswords, Sudoku, ornithology, alternative music, politics, reading, curries and real ales (in moderation).

Mrs Louise Langley
Nursery and Reception Teaching Assistant

Louise worked as an Accounts Clerk for 18 years before moving to Australia for a year with her husband Mark, who was on a Teacher Exchange Programme. Terrington Hall has played a big part in Louiseâs family life for many years. Daughters Emily and Hattie attend the school, Mark taught here for eight years, and, after returning to the UK, Louise trained as a Teaching Assistant and worked at Terrington Hall for two years. She thoroughly enjoyed her previous role as EYFS Teaching Assistant at Moorlands School in Leeds, but is delighted to return to Terrington as teaching assistant in Nursery and Reception. Outside school, Louise enjoys travelling, reading, walking and spending time with her family and friends.
Mrs Alison Salisbury

Alison was born in Sheffield, but has spent most of her life in North Yorkshire. Before coming to Terrington she spent many years working in specialist food retailing and delicatessens, as well as being a director of a bespoke kitchen manufacturing company. She has three sons, Isaac, Oscar and Felix and is married to Nick. She is a devoted rugby supporter and spends each Saturday of Rugby season watching her husband play for Malton and Norton 1st XV. She is a keen cook and spends much of her free time in the kitchen, trying out new recipes and baking. She loves entertaining, spending time in the fresh air with her family, walking and reading.

Mrs Jenny Christian
AAT level 3 Certificate in Accounting
Jenny has worked in school since November 2013, previously working as an assistant accountant in the Driffield area. She lives with her husband James and son Freddie along with numerous pets. Her interests include art, cookery and reading. She also enjoys walking and gardening.
Ms Paula Edgar
Paula joined Terrington Hall from Canon Lee School, where she worked as a Senior Administrator for four years. Prior to this she worked for the City of York Council as an Office Manager. Paula is the friendly presence in the schoolâs reception area and the first point of contact for people ringing or visiting the school. Her role is predominantly to support the Headmaster. As part of the Terrington âfamilyâ she is also on-hand to assist staff, parents and children wherever she can and to ensure the smooth running of the school. Paula has two children and enjoys spending time with them.
Mr Andrew Jones
Formerly Executive Head Chef of Ampleforth College and Head Chef at The Worsley Arms, Andrew joined Terrington Hall School in 2018. Using the finest fresh ingredients sourced from local suppliers, Andrew and the Catering Team create a wide variety of exciting, nutritious and delicious meals for pupils and staff.
Andrew is a 2 AA rosette holder of 14 yearsâ standing and the recipient of a number of industry awards. Married with four sons, the eldest a Chef with 3 Rosettes, he lives in Hovingham and enjoys walking, football and cricket.
Mrs Helen Render
Marketing and Admissions Manager
BA (Hons) Public Relations, University of Central Lancashire
Helen joined Terrington Hall School in August 2017 and is the first point of contact for matters relating to student admissions and marketing. She is thoroughly enjoying experiencing, capturing and sharing all that Terrington Hall School has to offer. Helen started her career in London working in Financial PR. Gradually working her way back up North, she has held Marketing and Communications Manager roles in a range of organisations including NSPCC and Barnsley College. Delighted to have come home to bring up her two children in such a beautiful part of the country, Helen enjoys regular walks on the beach and the occasional Park Run in Dalby Forest.
Ms Claire Wainwright
Head of Boarding
Having been at the hub of Terrington Hall life as Headmasterâs PA for 10 years, Claire was appointed Head of Boarding in January 2015 and has excelled in creating a warm, family-style boarding environment and ensuring that the House feels a âhome away from homeâ. Living in the Boarding House with her two sons Max and Zak, who both started at Terrington Hall at the age of 3, Claire is fully involved in all aspects of boarding life, from ensuring the full care of all boarders to overseeing an exciting programme of boardersâ special events and activities. Claire also runs the uniform shop and is the first port of call for pupils who fall sick at school.
