The Reception Class provides children with an excellent start as they begin their first year of formal schooling age 4-5 years. Many children move up to the Reception Class from our Nursery as well as other pre-schools and nurseries in the area.
The safe, challenging and supportive learning environment places children’s happiness, confidence and development at the heart of all we do. The focus in the early years is to develop a love of school and a love of learning whilst laying the foundations for future academic success. Small class sizes ensure that every child receives the personal attention necessary to secure a grounding in the core skills.
Continuing to follow the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage, many goals are reached through structured play involving a range of practical indoor and outdoor activities such as sand and water, painting, construction, dressing up and role-play. Others are worked towards within timetabled lessons such as Literacy, Numeracy and PE. Technology in the form of computers and interactive touch screens are an essential aspect of children’s learning.
The core curriculum is enhanced by specialist subject teaching in Spanish, Music, Swimming and Physical Education. Extra support is available for those who require it and more challenging work is provided for learners ready to move to the next level.
Throughout the year, we make full use of the extensive grounds where we conduct science investigations, grow plants and delve into Forest Schools. Such activities promote teamwork and develop independence. Children are encouraged to develop a lively interest and curiosity. They form friendships across academic years and are safe, secure and happy.
