Sport and physical development are an important part of the rounded education on offer at Terrington. Taught by specialist teachers, children play seasonal sports as part of their Games timetable, learning important sporting and life skills along the way.
Sport at Terrington Hall is inclusive and seeks to encourage both individual excellence and team spirit, whilst offering opportunity to all. It contributes significantly to our ethos that encourages collaboration, determination and generosity of spirit as well as building skills such as teamwork, leadership and effective communication. We also find sport to be a great release, allowing pupils to go back into the classroom and work that bit harder and smarter.
Recognising that sporting talent emerges and develops at different rates, every child from Year 3, regardless of ability, represents the school regularly in inter-school matches and all children take part in our annual Pre-Prep and Prep Sports Days. Such opportunities foster confidence and self-esteem and many pupils go on to develop a lifelong love of sport.
We have excellent sports facilities, including our new Astroturf pitch, and Prep School children also have access to the acres of playing fields, the swimming pool and tennis courts.
Terrington’s broad sporting programme includes Rugby, Football, Cricket, Hockey, Netball, Rounders, Cross Country, Tennis, Athletics and Swimming. We have a proud record of sporting success producing school teams at different age groups to compete successfully against other schools in the region.
Extensive use is made of the indoor cricket nets and the climbing wall and there are many other opportunities for the children to participate in a variety of sports and physical activities (such as girls’ rugby and gymnastics) through the extra-curricular programme.
Sporting ability is nurtured and celebrated and talented pupils play at the highest level. We are committed to ensuring that pupils with real potential will be encouraged to trial for local academies such as the Yorkshire Carnegie Academy (rugby) and for county representation. In recent years, a number of our pupils have been selected for the England Netball Performance Pathway programme, North Yorkshire and Yorkshire cricket and have won selection for the finals of the National Preparatory Schools Athletics Championships and for the North East Independent Schools Football Association squad.
