Whether progressing naturally from Lower Prep or new to the school, our priority is to ensure that all children settle in as quickly as possible.
At this stage, there is greater emphasis on independence and specialist subject learning aimed towards the Common Entrance or Scholarship examination at 13+. A high degree of personal organisation is now required from the pupils whose entire learning takes place with specialist teachers around the school.
As an independent Prep School, we commit to delivering a broad and balanced curriculum without compromising academic rigour. With core subjects such as literacy and maths prioritised throughout the school, and without the constraints of teaching to the Sats tests, the emphasis in Year 6 is on children continuing to enjoy learning. Art, Music, Languages, Sport and Drama are an integral part of the curriculum and all pupils are encouraged to make the most of opportunities to develop their interests and talents.
Pupils are taught by specialist teachers who are passionate advocates of their subjects. Our key principle is to develop in pupils an ingrained enthusiasm to learn, enquire and think independently. Smaller class sizes ensure that we deliver an education tailored to the child and we monitor attainment, effort and progress to ensure everyone achieves their potential. There are significant opportunities for Year 6 pupils to distinguish themselves and lay the groundwork both for their Scholarship Entries and Common Entrance exams in Year 8.
Pastoral care is at the heart of what we do and we take pupils’ wellbeing very seriously. Pupils are closely monitored by their form tutors and small class sizes mean that staff can genuinely engage with each child and nurture his or her innate ability. Traditions such as family-style dining ensures that we get to know every pupil outside of the classroom. Positive relationships are further enhanced during activity and break times.
In Year 6, or earlier if you are considering a highly selective school, we work closely with parents to help determine the best senior school for your child.
