Art installation in tribute to Mr Magson

This summer our community gathered to unveil a specially-commissioned art installation created in tribute to art teacher Phil Magson, who died earlier this year.

Mr Magson taught at Terrington Hall from 2004. His wide-ranging intelligence was reflected in the fact he taught various subjects before taking on the role which reflected his huge artistic talents – as Head of Art. He was a much-loved friendly and endlessly-enthusiastic figure who inspired pupils and colleagues alike during his time with us.

Phil was also a highly-regarded ceramicist, known as a skilled thrower of contemporary stoneware. His work features in galleries across the region and he was a popular exhibitor at York Open Studios.

After Phil’s untimely death, the School commissioned local steelwork designer, James Morris of Sculpsteel Metalwork in Terrington, to design a fitting tribute.

The resulting artwork, a modern take of a potter at his wheel, was unveiled in a special ceremony on the school front lawn on the last day of term. It was a reflection of Phil’s popularity that many Old Terringtonians joined current pupils, parents and staff for the unveiling ceremony.

The ceremony was attended by Phil’s brother Simon, who spoke movingly about his brother – known as Philip to his family – and offered warmth and encouragement to our pupils. Long-standing colleague and friend Mr Witteveen also shared his memories and reflected that Phil would be very much missed.

The installation is surrounded by fruit trees and has two nearby benches kindly donated by Year 8 parents. It is hoped the area will be valued as a place of reflection and calm.

Many thanks for the many members of our school community past and present who have donated to the cost of the artwork at our gofundme page.

Phil was a wonderfully talented, witty, kind and infectiously enthusiastic member of our team who will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.
